  • the additional circuit or device may be housed in a layer independent of the FCB and RCB and may, for example, reside between them, interacting with the induced eddy currents in each of the coupling frames (CF1, CF2).
  • the slits (S1, 404; S2, 409) may be made discrete and less visible by cutting them to a narrow width (e.g. 10 ⁇ m, 20 ⁇ m, 50 ⁇ m to 150 ⁇ m), this may be achieved by laser cutting for example.
  • the apparent width of the slits (S1, 404; S2, 409) may be reduced by the thickness of coating applied to front or rear card bodies (FCB 402, RCB 408).

  • each edge of the slits (S1, 404; S2, 409) may have a coating thickness of 5 microns thereby reducing the apparent slit width by 10 microns.

  • the second slit (S2) 507 in this manner enables the rear card body (RCB) 506 to function as a coupling frame (CF) by directing induced eddy currents around the module antenna (MA) and permitting inductive coupling.
  • the design of the second slit (S2) 507 in this manner eliminates the need for an insert or other fill material to cover a module opening (MO) and prevents the occurrence of a potential weak spot in the card body behind the transponder chip module (TCM) 501.
  • the slit (S2) 507 may describe any shape, including spiral, in order to optimise the overlap of the coupling frame with a given module antenna (MA).
  • the slit (S2) 507 may have varying width along its length, e.g. it may begin at the edge of the panel at a width of 100 ⁇ m and widen when in proximity to the module antenna (MA) to 300 ⁇ m in order to increase the radio frequency communication performance of the device.
  • the slits (S1, 504; S2, 507) may be filled with resin or other material to prevent ingress of liquid or debris during use of the card.
  • the slit (S2) 507 may also be concealed by placement of a security hologram, logo or other feature.
  • FIG. 6A shows an exploded view of a variation of a solid metal dual interface card.
  • the first slit (S1) 604 of the front card body (FCB) 602 runs parallel to the second slit (S2) 607 of the rear card body (RCB) 606 but is off-set in position such that the slits do not overlap, thereby increasing the mechanical stability of the card near the position of the transponder chip module (TCM) 601.
  • the configuration shown may apply equally to a rear card body (RCB) 606 panel that includes a module opening (MO) and second slit (S2).
  • FIG. 6B shows a rear view of the assembled solid metal dual interface card, excluding the magnetic stripe (MS) 608 and signature panel (SP) 609.
  • the offsetting of the positions of the slits (S1) 604 and (S2) 607 is shown, such that the slits do not overlap.
  • the rear card body (RCB) 606 fits into a pocket milled, etched, stamped or otherwise formed in the rear side of the front card body (FCB) 602.
  • the pocket may allow the rear card body (RCB) 606 to be wrapped around its perimeter by a frame from the front card body (FCB) 602. This frame may serve a role in stabilising the front card body (FCB) 602 during production of the pocket.
  • the pocket is formed by a milling tool stress on the metal layer (ML) comprising the front card body (FCB) 602 may cause permanent warping.
  • the presence of the frame as shown in FIG. 6B may add rigidity and stability to the front card body (FCB) 602 and to the overall card assembly.
  • an easily machined metal or metal alloy may be chosen for some or all of the card construction. This could include various alloys of stainless steel or aluminium alloys such as duralumin.
  • An additional benefit to using a metal alloy relates to the reading and writing of data to the high coercivity magnetic stripe (MS) 608.

  • Placing the magnetic stripe on top of a nonmagnetic metal or metal alloy e.g. 300 series stainless steel, aluminium, aluminium alloys, titanium results in reduced data corruption and problems reading data using conventional magnetic stripe readers.

Claims (14)

  1. Carte à puce métallique comprenant :
    un corps de carte avant (FCB, 502, 602) composé d'une première couche de métal (ML) avec une première fente (S1, 504, 604) s'étendant à partir de son bord externe jusqu'à une ouverture de module (MO, 503, 603) pour accepter un module de puce de transpondeur (TCM, 501, 601), la première couche de métal servant de premier cadre de couplage ; et
    un corps de carte arrière (RCB, 506, 606) composé d'une seconde couche de métal (ML) avec une seconde fente (S2, 507, 607) s'étendant à partir de son bord externe, la seconde couche de métal servant de second cadre de couplage ;
    dans laquelle les deux couches de métal se supportent, mécaniquement, l'une l'autre, en particulier autour des deux fentes et de l'ouverture de module ;
    la seconde fente étant une fente étendue s'étendant vers l'intérieur à partir d'un bord du corps de carte arrière qui est interne par rapport à la carte à puce métallique et décrivant une boucle autour d'une zone chevauchant une antenne de module du module de puce de transpondeur, la seconde fente étant en outre formée afin de laisser une zone de métal solide derrière le module de puce de transpondeur ;
    comprenant en outre un évidement dans la première couche de métal pour loger la seconde couche de métal.
  2. Carte à puce métallique selon la revendication 1, dans laquelle :
    la seconde fente (S2, 507, 607) a une largeur variable le long de sa longueur.
  3. Carte à puce métallique selon la revendication 1, dans laquelle :
    la fente (S1, S2, 504, 604, 507, 607) dans chaque couche de métal (ML, FCB, RCB, 502, 602) chevauche une partie de l'antenne de module du module de puce de transpondeur (TCM, 501, 601).
  4. Carte à puce métallique selon la revendication 1, dans laquelle :
    la fente (S2, 507, 607) d'une couche de métal (ML, RCB, 506, 606) est positionnée dans une position ou orientation différente de la fente (S1, 504, 604) de l'autre couche de métal (ML, FCB, 502, 602), de sorte que les fentes des couches de métal ne sont pas alignées entre elles.
  5. Carte à puce métallique selon la revendication 4, dans laquelle :
    la première fente (S1, 604) du corps de carte avant (FCB, 602) s'étend parallèlement à la seconde fente (S2, 607) du corps de carte arrière (RCB, 606) mais est décalée du point de vue de la position, de sorte que les fentes ne se chevauchent pas.
  6. Carte à puce métallique selon la revendication 1, comprenant en outre une ou plusieurs des caractéristiques suivantes disposées sur la seconde couche de métal (ML, RCB, 506, 606) :
    une bande magnétique (MS, 508, 608) ;
    un tableau de signature (SP, 509, 609) ; et
    un hologramme.
  7. Carte à puce métallique selon la revendication 1, dans laquelle :
    un ou les deux cadres de couplage est (sont) raccordé(s) à un circuit de dispositif pour alimenter le circuit de dispositif ou améliorer la performance de lecture/écriture de la carte à puce métallique conjointement avec un lecteur.
  8. Carte à puce métallique selon la revendication 1, comprenant en outre :
    une couche de matériau non conducteur séparant les couches de métal.
  9. Carte à puce métallique selon la revendication 1, dans laquelle :
    les deux couches de métal (ML, FCB, RCB, 502, 602) sont assemblées entre elles par un film adhésif (AF, 505, 605).
  10. Carte à puce métallique selon la revendication 1, dans laquelle :
    le corps de carte avant (FCB) a une épaisseur de 760 µm à 800 µm ; et
    le corps de carte arrière (RCB) a une épaisseur de 300 µm à 400 µm.
  11. Carte à puce métallique selon la revendication 1, dans laquelle :
    un ou les deux parmi le corps de carte avant (FCB) et le corps de carte arrière (RCB) est (sont) recouvert(s) avec un matériau diélectrique, en particulier un carbone noir décoratif résistant de type diamant (DLC).
  12. Carte à puce métallique selon la revendication 11, dans laquelle :
    un revêtement appliqué sur le corps de carte avant ou arrière (FCB, RCB) est également appliqué sur un bord de la fente du corps de carte avant ou arrière sur lequel le revêtement est appliqué, de sorte qu'une largeur de fente apparente est réduite.
  13. Carte à puce métallique selon la revendication 1, dans laquelle :
    la carte à puce métallique est opérationnelle à la fois en modes contact et sans contact.
  14. Carte à puce métallique selon la revendication 1, comprenant :
    le module de puce de transporteur (TCM) avec l'antenne de module, l'antenne de module comprenant une antenne plane comprenant une longue voie conductrice unique disposée dans un motif en spirale.
