- the reference liquid is directed before the sample liquid in the flow cell to remove any traces of a preceding measurement. Since the absorption of the sample is mathematically the ratio between sample liquid and reference liquid, it is possible to first direct the sample liquid into the flow cell, followed by the air bubble and the reference liquid.
