Le procédé est caractérisé en ce que les tiges filtrantes sont entraînées selon l'axe transversal sur un premier tambour d'avance et de découpe (20) qui coopère avec un premier dispositif de coupe (24) monté sur le premier tambour d'avance et de découpe (20) et qui possède des moyens d'avance pour le déplacement suivant l'axe longitudinal des tiges filtrantes sur le premier tambour d'avance et de découpe (20) et ensuite sur un deuxième tambour d'avance et de découpe (30) qui coopère avec un deuxième dispositif de coupe (34) monté sur le deuxième tambour d'avance et de découpe (30) et qui possède des moyens d'avance pour le déplacement suivant l'axe longitudinal des tiges filtrantes sur le deuxième tambour d'avance et de découpe (30) et en ce que a) les deux dispositifs de coupe (24, 34) sont actionnés pour couper les tiges filtrantes, les tiges filtrantes étant découpées par le premier dispositif de coupe (24) sur le premier tambour d'avance et de découpe (20) et par le deuxième dispositif de coupe (34) sur le deuxième tambour d'avance et de découpe (30) en trois bouts filtres au total d'une première longueur prédéterminée de bout filtre; ou b) l'un des deux dispositifs de coupe (24, 34) est actionné pour couper les tiges filtrantes tandis que l'autre dispositif de coupe (34, 24) n'est pas actionné. Les tiges filtrantes sont coupées par le dispositif de coupe actionné (24, 34) sur le tambour d'avance et de découpe (20, 30) qui lui est associé, en deux bouts filtres d'une deuxième longueur prédéterminée de bout filtre.
