Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a connector for connection to a mating connector according to the preamble of the main claim.
  • the invention further relates to a method for introducing a contact element in such a connector.
  • Connectors are used, inter alia, to produce, for example, in motor vehicles electrical connections between cables.
  • a connector may be provided so that a plurality of individual cables lead into this connector and by coupling the connector to a mating connector an electrical connection between each of the plurality of cables and corresponding ends of continuing cables can be made.
  • suitable sealing elements may be provided in the connector, which create in the assembled state sealing around the cable or contact elements around.
  • the connector may have a housing in which a plurality of extending in the longitudinal direction and open at an upper side of the housing contact receiving spaces are provided. In these contact receiving spaces, individual contact elements, which in turn are connected to one end of a cable, can be accommodated.
  • a sealing mat Adjacent to the top of the housing, a sealing mat may be arranged, which is formed of an elastic material and each having in the region of the upper openings of the contact receiving spaces corresponding openings.
  • a pressure plate can be arranged on a side opposite the top of the housing side of the sealing mat.
  • the pressure plate may be held directly by the housing or indirectly by intermediately mounted means on the housing.
  • the pressure plate may also be integrally formed with a part of the housing. Thus, the sealing mat between the top of the housing and the pressure plate is held.
  • a conventional connector is for example in DE 10 2006 017 448 A1 described.
  • individual or a plurality of contact elements can be arranged in associated contact receiving spaces of the housing.
  • the contact elements including the attached cable ends can be inserted through openings in the pressure plate and in the sealing mat through to a respective contact receiving space.
  • the dimensions and the elasticity of the sealing mat are chosen such that the sealing mat after passing the contact elements sealingly around puts the cable ends or the ends of the contact elements around.
  • an outer circumference of the openings in the sealing mat should be smaller than an outer circumference of the contact elements or cable ends.
  • One underlying the invention is that in conventional connectors leaks can be provoked by the fact that damage to the sealing mat can occur when inserting the contact elements in the contact receiving spaces of the housing. In such an insertion a contact element must be pushed through a circumferentially smaller opening in the sealing mat. In particular, when the contact elements have no smooth side surface, it may cause damage to the sealing mat and thus later to leaks. For this reason, in conventional connectors usually contact elements with smooth side surfaces, also referred to as clean-body contacts used, such contact elements may often be acted upon only with low tensile forces before they tear out of the connector housing. It may be preferred, instead of such laterally smooth contact elements, to use other contact elements which have a projection projecting transversely to their longitudinal direction, similar to a barb. Such contact elements are sometimes referred to as lance contacts.
  • the insertion aids can in this case be rigidly secured to the pressure plate and the pressure plate can be designed to be displaceable relative to the housing.
  • the insertion aids can be formed integrally with the pressure plate, wherein the pressure plate can be produced, for example by injection molding together with the insertion aids attached thereto.
  • the insertion aids may also be provided as separate components, which may be rigidly and preferably permanently attached to the pressure plate. The entire unit of pressure plate and insertion aids can then be displaced relative to the housing, so that the of the Pressure plate toward the sealing mat projecting insertion are located in a first position of the pressure plate outside the openings of the sealing mat and then pushed into the openings of the sealing mat during displacement of the pressure plate in a second position.
  • individual introduction aids or a totality of insertion aids can be designed to be displaceable relative to the pressure plate.
  • the pressure plate itself need not necessarily be displaceable in the longitudinal direction. Instead, the pressure plate can be held firmly on the housing and only the insertion aids are designed to be displaceable relative to the pressure plate and thus also relative to the housing.
  • a rigid connection between insertion aids and pressure plate can facilitate, for example, a displacement of the insertion aids together with the pressure plate
  • a separate displaceability of insertion aids regardless of a displacement of the pressure plate, for example, contribute to a safer clamping of the sealing mat between the housing and the pressure plate.
  • the insertion aids may have an outline surrounding an insertion channel.
  • This border for example, have a smooth outer surface and fillets at its distal end, to avoid damaging the sealing mat when inserting the insertion aids in their openings.
  • a dimension of the border in the longitudinal direction may be greater than a thickness of the sealing mat, so that the insertion aids inserted into the openings of the sealing mat can completely and reliably protect the lateral edges of the openings of the sealing mat against mechanical contact with contact elements to be inserted.
  • the border of the insertion aids may be formed of a stable material, on the one hand to allow insertion of this border into the openings of the sealing mat and on the other hand to protect the sealing mat against mechanical damage by leading through the insertion channel contact elements.
  • An inner contour of the border can be designed correspondingly to an outer contour of an inserted contact element.
  • the inner contour and the outer contour can be designed to be complementary.
  • the border of the insertion can be cylindrical. If alternatively rectangular contact elements are to be inserted, the border of the insertion aids can also be rectangular.
  • An outer circumference of the insertion aid or an outer circumference of the border of the insertion aid should be larger than an inner circumference of an associated opening in the sealing mat prior to insertion of the insertion aid into the opening. In this way, on the one hand, it can be achieved that upon insertion of the insertion aid into the openings of the sealing mat, these openings are widened due to the flexibility of the sealing mat material. On the other hand, such expansion due to the elasticity of the sealing mat material is reversible, so that the sealing mat after a subsequent withdrawal of the insertion of the openings tightly sealingly around the contact elements and the attached cable ends can cling.
  • the connector In the assembled, ie populated, state, the connector preferably has one or more elongated contact elements received in corresponding contact receiving spaces. Since the sealing mat of the connector is protected by the insertion aids during the insertion of the contact elements into respective contact receiving spaces, the contact elements may have transverse to their longitudinal direction projecting projections. In other words, the contact elements may be formed, for example, as lance contacts in which protrude lateral barbs and can provide a secure attachment of the contact element within the contact receiving space of the connector.
  • an associated insertion aid is first moved into a corresponding opening of the sealing mat inside. After this, the sealing mat is protected due to the imported insertion against mechanical damage, a contact element can pass through the sealing mat into a corresponding Contact receiving space of the connector housing are introduced. Subsequently, the insertion can be displaced out of the opening of the sealing mat, so that the edges of the openings of the sealing mat due to the elasticity of the sealing mat material sealingly around the inserted contact element or its cable end can put around.
  • a plurality of insertion aids may be provided on the pressure plate of the connector and firmly connected to this pressure plate, so that the pressure plate including the insertion aids fixedly mounted thereon can be displaced for displacing the plurality of insertion aids.
  • the pressure plate can be displaced relative to the connector housing to thereby insert insertion aids in several or all of the openings in the sealing mat and then to bring contact elements in the connector housing can. After all contact elements have been correctly introduced, the pressure plate can be moved back again and thus the insertion aids are removed from the sealing mat, so that the sealing mat can fulfill its sealing purpose.
  • Fig. 1 shows components of a connector 1 for an electrical connector in an electronic control unit of a motor vehicle in an exploded view.
  • the connector 1 has an upper housing part 3 and a lower housing part 5, which together form a housing 7. Between the upper housing part 3 and the lower housing part 5, a sealing mat 9 is arranged.
  • the lower housing part 5 can be connected to the upper housing part 3 by means of latching arms 11, the sealing mat 9 being clamped between the two housing parts 3, 5 and the latching arms 11 reaching through slots 13 in the sealing mat 9.
  • Openings 15, 17 are provided both in the upper housing part 3 and in the sealing mat 9, through which a contact element can be pushed in each case, in order then to be locked in place in a contact receiving space 19 in the lower housing part 5.
  • Fig. 2 shows a contact element 21, as it can be accommodated in the connector 1.
  • the contact element 21 has at its distal end 23 a so-called box contact 25.
  • a slot-shaped opening 27 is provided at a front end, can engage in the correspondingly complementary formed contact elements of a mating connector.
  • a protruding transversely to the longitudinal direction projection 29 is formed. Because of this barb-like projection 29, such a contact element 21 is also referred to as a lance contact.
  • the contact element 21 has two crimp areas 33, 35. Individual tabs of the crimping areas 33, 35 can be crimped around one end of a cable so that a reliable mechanical and electrical connection between the cable (in Fig. 2 not shown) and the contact element 21 can be produced.
  • Fig. 3 the components of the connector are arranged in an insertion configuration.
  • a sealing mat 9 is in this case arranged between a lower part 5 of the housing 7 and a pressure plate 37.
  • the pressure plate 37 may be formed here as a separate component.
  • the pressure plate 37 for example, part of in Fig. 1 be shown upper housing part 3.
  • the parts of the housing 7 may consist of a rigid material, such as plastic, in particular thermoplastic such as polyamide 66 (DIN designation: PA 66 GF30) or polybutylene terephthalate (PBT)
  • the sealing mat 9 is made of an elastic material, such as Example silicones, liquid silicones or natural rubber, for example liquid silicone rubber (eg LSR 3003) or nitrile rubber (eg NBR - Nitrile Butadiene Rubber).
  • liquid silicone rubber eg LSR 3003
  • nitrile rubber eg NBR - Nitrile Butadiene Rubber
  • insertion aid 41 On the pressure plate 37 an insertion aid 41 is formed.
  • This insertion aid 41 is integrally formed in the illustrated example with the pressure plate 37 and projects from this down to the sealing mat 9 from.
  • the insertion aid 41 has a cylindrical border 43, the inner contour of which is adapted to an outer contour of a contact element 21 which is round in cross-section.
  • the insertion aid 41 is pushed into the opening 17 in the sealing mat 9 by pressure on the pressure plate 37.
  • the border 43 spreads with its smooth outer surface, the edges of the opening 17 of the sealing mat 9 apart and thus forms an insertion 45 through which the contact element 21 are inserted through the sealing mat 9 and ultimately into the contact receiving space 19 in the lower housing part 5 can.
  • the border 43 protects the lateral edges of the sealing mat 9 and in particular the sensitive blades 39 formed by the grooves against damage by the contact element 21.
  • the pressure plate as in Fig. 4 shown to be pulled back upwards.
  • the border 43 of the insertion aid 41 is pulled out of the sealing mat 9.
  • the sealing mat 9 can then invest tightly around a crimped to the contact element 21 end of a cable 47 and seal in this way the connector against the ingress of dirt and moisture.
