- the invention also extends to a postal processing machine comprising a device according to the invention, and in particular to a postal sorting machine comprising a unstacker, a sorting conveyor in which the consignments are moved in series on step singing constant and a synchronizer interposed between the unstacker and the sorting conveyor to make up the deviations between two consecutive shipments, and wherein the first conveyor to make the first thickness measurement is part of the synchronizer and the second conveyor to make the second thickness measurement is part of the sorting conveyor.

- This means may consist of two laser rangefinders 4A, 5A respectively oriented on the two opposite faces 3C, 3D of the shipment 3 with respect to a central reference axis A. These rangefinders are arranged to measure the thickness of the shipment where it is tight in the conveyor 2A, in practice at any point of its height.
- the device 1 also comprises, at the second portion 1 B, a second means for measuring the thickness of each item when the item is moved in the conveyor 2B.
- This means may also consist of two laser rangefinders 4B, 5B respectively oriented on the two opposite faces 3C, 3D of the transmission 3 with respect to a central reference axis A. These rangefinders are placed to measure the thickness of the sending in its upper part where the shipment is free to bloom fan since it is not held at this height level by the conveyor 2B.
- the device 1 may comprise a blowing device 6 arranged to direct a flow of air up and down on the upper end 3B of each item 3 to promote and enhance the fan opening of the upper end 3B of the item 3 in the second conveyor 2B.
- the guide 7 may for example limit to about 30 millimeters (mm) the spacing of the fan.
- the thickness measurement signals provided by the measuring means are transmitted to a data processing unit 8 arranged to compare the two measurements of thickness of a shipment 3 made respectively when the consignment is in the first 2A and in the second conveyor 2B and detect if there is a difference in these two measurements that the shipment is an open shipment.
- the first thickness measuring means 4A, 5A may also be in the form of a laser transceiver which cooperates with the first conveyor 2A.

- the transceiver is mounted in the deformable rim of a low-pressure wheel of the conveyor 2A. and exploits the reflection of the laser signal on a reflective inner wall of the wheel.
- FIG. 2 shows an optical emitter 13 which emits a structured light beam on the upper end 3B of the free item 3 to fan open, and a camera 14 which is arranged to form a digital image of the upper end 3B of the shipment comprising the rays reflected by the sheets of the shipment 3.
- the camera 14 can be placed above the shipment 3 or on a front or rear side of the shipment 3.
- the data processing unit 8 will in this case be arranged to analyze the image provided by the camera 14, for example to determine a profile of the upper end of the shipment. The result of this analysis is used to complete the detection by comparison of the thickness measurements in the conveyors 2A and 2B. This image analysis result can for example be used to reinforce or confirm / invalidate the decision to detect an open-type send provided by the differential measurement described above.
- FIG. 3 there is shown a postal processing machine using the device 1 according to the invention.
- This machine is more particularly a postal sorting machine comprising a unstacker 20, a sorting conveyor 21, for example with stacked strips, in which the shipments 3 in series on edge are moved at constant pitch (distance between the leading edges of two consecutive shipments ) and a synchronizer 22 interposed between the unstacker 20 and the sorting conveyor 21 which catches gaps in the pitch between 3 consecutive shipments.
- the first conveyor 2A of the device 1 according to the invention can be an integral part of the synchronizer 22 consisting of a plurality of low pressure wheel trains, in particular multi-stage wheel sets of wheels.
- the second conveyor 2B of the device 1 may form an integral part of the sorting conveyor 21, in particular in the form of a portion thereof with a single height band.
- the mailpiece in order to detect an open mail which is moved in the sorting machine of FIG. 3, the mailpiece is moved on edge in the first conveyor 2A which holds the mailing by tightening it over substantially its entire height. thus preventing to bloom in fan.

- the speed of movement of the items in a sorting machine is sufficient to force an open mail to fan out in the second conveyor 2B.
- a difference in thickness measurement is obtained which is large enough to be unambiguously detected.
- the first conveyor 2A will be sized to maintain singing shipments in C4 and C5 format over their entire height.
- the second conveyor 2B will be sized to leave each shipment free at a height level of about 90 mm measured from the foot of the shipment.
- the two thickness measurements are made substantially at the same height with respect to the foot 3A of the items of mail and, for example, about 150 mm above the foot 3A of the items, which corresponds substantially to the height of a shipment in C5 format.
- Several thickness measurements superimposed in height can be envisaged for perform the second thickness measurement in order to take into account an extended spectrum of open items to be detected.
