Abstract

A shredder for refuse materials, comprising a tank (2) with an open side, its end walls supporting two parallel shafts (8, 8') provided with mutually co-penetrating grinding wheels (12) rigid with two counter-rotating motors (10), characterised by comprising means for moving one shaft (8') away from and towards the other shaft (8).

Description

  • The present invention relates to a shredder.
  • Shredders for refuse materials are known consisting of a tank of inverted frusto-pyramidal shape with an open side and with its end walls supporting two parallel shafts connected to two counter-rotating electric motors.
  • A plurality of spacers and three-lobed grinding wheels are alternately fixed rigidly to each shaft, each grinding wheel of each shaft facing a spacer of the other shaft and penetrating it comb-like.
  • These known shredders have however the drawback of providing an exit material of constant size linked to the passage gap between the grinding wheel and spacer, to vary the size it being necessary to replace the grinding wheels or spacers, with considerable time loss and laborious work.
  • According to the invention this drawback is eliminated by a shredder for refuse materials, as described in claim 1.
  • The invention is described in detail hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
    • Figure 1 is a plan view of a shredder according to the invention, and
    • Figure 2 is an enlarged front view in the direction II-II of Figure 1.
  • As can be seen from the figures the shredder of the invention comprises substantially an open tank 2 of inverted frusto-pyramidal shape with two parallel end walls 4, 4' which by way of bearings 6 support two parallel shafts 8, 8' rigidly fixed to the shafts of two counter-rotating electric motors 10.
  • A plurality of three-lobed grinding wheels 12 with interposed spacers 14 are fixed to each shaft such that the grinding wheels 12 of each shaft 8 face the spacers 14 of the other shaft 8' and mutually copenetrate comb-like.
  • The bearings 6 supporting one of the two shafts 8 are mounted within plates 16 which are slidable relative to the walls 4 along guides 20 and are rigid with the piston rods 22 of hydraulic cylinder-piston units 24.
  • The use of the shredder is traditional, the material being fed into the tank and shredded by the action of the grinding wheels 12.
  • When the shredding size produced by the grinding wheel is to be changed, the piston rods 22 of the two hydraulic cylinder-piston units 24 are made to extend or retract to vary the distance between the axes of the two shafts 8. 8'.

Claims (4)

  2. A shredder as claimed in claim 1, characterised in that said means consist of hydraulic cylinder-piston units (24), with their axis transverse to the shaft axis.
  3. A shredder as claimed in claim 1, characterised in that said shafts are mounted within a plate (16) slidable along the tank ends.
  4. A shredder as claimed in claim 1, characterised in that the grinding wheels are of three-lobed type.
