Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a collapsible canopy comprising two pivot blocks and a plurality of collapsible support arches, each having one of its ends pivotally connected to one of the pivot blocks and the other of its ends pivotally connected to the other pivot block, and in which each arch comprises a plurality of straight elongate sections connected by one or more joints.
  • the joints between the straight sections of the arches are pivotal joints so that the sections connected by the joints can be folded up against one another. This makes the canopy useful where it is to be carried by a person to a particular destination, opened up for use, and then after use collapsed and carried away. This is desirable especially where the canopy is for use as a beach shelter, for example.
  • a problem encountered by such a canopy is the restrictions in the relative dimensions of the different arches and sections thereof to enable the canopy to be folded up ready for storage.
  • the present invention seeks to provide a remedy.
  • the present invention is directed to a collapsible canopy having the features set out in the opening paragraph of the present specification, in which the length of a first such section of a first such arch differs from the length of a second such section of a second such arch, corresponding in its position in the said second arch to that of the said first section in the said first arch, at least one of the said first and second such sections being adjustable in length whereby the canopy, when erected, is shaped according to the difference between the lengths of the said first and second sections, whilst at the same time is collapsible by pivoting the sections together at the pivot blocks, adjusting the length of the said at least one of the said first and second sections so that those two sections become substantially equal in length, and folding the arches at joints at the ends of those sections.
  • At least one of the said first and second such sections is telescopically adjustable. It can thereby be made adjustable with relative ease.
  • the said first and second sections are sections which extend from one of the pivot blocks.
  • a preferred construction of the arch is one having five such sections, preferably so that the arch has a generally half-octagonal shape, although less than five sections for each arch is possible.
  • the canopy is made suitable for most uses if it has at least three such arches, although a very simple one could be made with only two arches, and more than three arches could be used, and/or more than five sections per arch could be used, to give a more continuously curved shape to the canopy.
  • a covering of sheet material is held in the form of a shelter by the arches either by having the cover extending over the outsides thereof, or by having the cover suspended from the arches so that it is on the insides thereof.
  • At least one further arch may be provided which extends transversely of those which are connected to the pivot blocks to retain the canopy in an open condition when it is in use.
  • the canopy shown in Figures 1 and 3 to 6 comprises two pivot blocks 10 and 12, to which opposite ends of three aluminium tubular support frame arches 14, 16 and 18 are pivotally connected respectively.
  • Each of the arches 14, 16 and 18 comprises five straight sections 20, 22, 24, 26 and 28. These sections are connected together by pivot joints 30, 32, 34 and 36, so that straight sections 20 and 22 are connected by pivot joint 30, sections 22 and 24 are connected by pivot joint 32 and so on.
  • Each of these pivot joints is constructed in such a fashion that the sections which they join together can be folded up against one another, but such that they cannot be pivoted outwardly away from one another beyond a certain predetermined obtuse angle, preferably an angle of 135° or 3 ⁇ /4 radians, so that, when opened out, each arch has the general shape of a half-octagon, as shown in Figure 1.
  • a fabric cover 38 of the canopy (shown in broken lines in Figure 1 for the sake of clarity) is opened out fully, being secured to the arches by way of tunnels in the fabric through which the various sections of the arches are threaded.
  • the cover 38 thereby determines the angular spacing between each arch when the canopy is erected.
  • Each pivot block 10 and 12 is anchored to the ground by means of a peg (not shown) driven through a hole 40 in a flat horizontal base plate 42 of each block. As a result, the canopy is held in its open condition, and cannot collapse sideways in view of the limit to which each joint between adjacent sections can open.
  • Collapse of the canopy by pivoting of the arches relative to the pivot blocks 10 and 12 is prevented by way of a central transverse arch 44 having one end received in a pocket 46 in the bottom edge of a rearmost portion of the cover 38 and having its other end connected to the mid point of the mid section 24 of the forwardmost arch 14 by means of a clip 48.
  • the pocket is about 4" (10cm) long.
  • each pivot block 10 or 12 comprises a flat generally horizontal base plate 42 provided with a peg hole 40 upwardly from which base 42 extend two support plates 60 and 62 which are spaced apart from one another and which are generally parallel to one another.
  • Four pivot pins 64 extend across these plates 60 and 62, and are spaced apart across the plates at a predetermined height above the base plate 42.
  • Four moulded synthetic plastics end-section receiving sleeves 66 are pivotally secured to the pivot pins 64 respectively. They have open ends directed outwardly from the pivot block 10 or 12.
  • the sleeves 66 accommodate respective ends of the sections 20 (or 28) of the arches 14, 16 and 18. These sections are also pivotally secured to the pivot pin 64 so that the latter extends therethrough.
  • the forwardmost sleeve 66 is longer than the other sleeves. It may be unused as shown in Figure 1 or it may have one end of a further arch inserted into it for the support of a porch cover or second skin for the canopy, as shown in Figures 3 and 4.
  • the straight sections 20 (and correspondingly sections 28) of arches 14 and 16 are telescopic, having inner and outer tubular parts 68 and 70 such that the inner tubular part 68 can be slid outwardly and back into the outer tubular part 70. This enables these sections to be adjusted in length.
  • the end sections 20 and 28 of the rearmost arch 18 are longer than either of the sections 20 and 28 of the arches 16 and 14, and the sections 20 and 28 of the arch 16 are longer than those of the arch 14, so that the canopy has a greater depth than it has height.
  • the canopy is about 80" wide by 70" deep by 50" high (about 200cm wide by 175cm deep by 125cm high).
  • the canopy When the canopy is collapsed, the pegs that were inserted through the holes 40 are removed, the transverse arch 44 is disconnected, the sections 20 and 28 of the arches 14 and 16 are extended so that they become equal in length to the fixed length sections 20 and 28 of the rear arch 18, the arches are pivoted so that they are brought together, as facilitated by the blocks 10 and 12, and the latter are then swung up using the pivots 30 and 36 towards pivots 32 and 34, these latter in turn being used now to pivot the sections 22 and 26 inwardly towards the sections 24. In this condition, the collapsed canopy is no longer, or is not much longer, than the length of the centre sections 24.
  • the joints 30, 32, 34 and 36 are such as to provide a spacing between the sections they hold together even when the latter are folded up one against the other, to accommodate the depth of the pivot blocks 10 and 12.
  • Figure 2 shows a frame collapsed in this way, although in this instance it will be appreciated that the frame shown in Figure 2 has arches each consisting of three sections and not five.
  • the sections 20 and 28 of arch 18 may bre shorter than those of arches 16 and 14, and those of arch 16 shorter than those of arch 14, so that the canopy is less deep than it is high.
  • the sections 20 and 28 which are telescopic would need adapting so that they can be extended when in use and shortened for storage.
  • the arches 16 and 18 which have telescopically adjustable sections, with the arch 14 having side sections which are the shortest side sections and fixed in length.
  • the cover 38 may be on the inside of the arches and the cover itself may prevent the joints being opened beyond that angle.
  • the illustrated canopy provides a rigid structure capable of withstanding strong winds.
  • the aluminium tubular sections are preferably 18mm or 20mm in diameter.
