Description

The present invention relates to a new composition of paraffin and its use as a main constituent for candles with improved burning time, arranged in particular in a glass enclosure or other containers.

It is known that the duration of combustion of a composition of paraffin, for example a candle, is an important commercial criterion and that a request is more and more often expressed, as well for use in religious buildings only for lighting in private homes, to have candles on the market having both a low combustion rate, a combustion complete, harmonious and regular, as well as an illuminating flame and smokeless.

We also know that to increase the burning time of a candle, several solutions have been considered, whether by adding accessories, for example metallic, to be incorporated into the candle, or by specific formulations of the combustible mass. This is last aspect, which tends to propose a paraffin composition aiming to improve the duration as well as the quality of combustion, which is concerned with the present invention.

For candles, or any other item using paraffin intended for combustion, can burn during a long time it is known that the paraffin composition which constitutes, possibly supplemented with different additives, must have a relatively slow burning rate, i.e. a slower consumption of hydrocarbon products. In addition, this combustion must take place in a perfectly regular manner and homogeneous, so that the upper surface of the candle remains substantially flat and that it avoids presenting, at its upper part concave surface, sometimes with an accentuated hollow at the level of the wick candle. In the latter case, in fact, the amount of air becoming insufficient to supply the flame, combustion results incomplete fuel mass, up to extinction of flame.

We also know that, in the profession, we call commonly used in glass enclosures, generally transparent, most of which are cylindrical in shape, but whose cross-section transverse can take any shape. Inside these verrines can be arranged in different materials and, in particular, a paraffin composition, alone or as a mixture, which, associated with a or several wicks, is used as a lighting candle. This is type of application, which is not limiting, which will refer and which will be designated globally under the name "verrine" in the rest of this description.

The choice of a paraffin composition suitable for a use as a candle in a verrine is an operation complex because many parameters have to be taken into account consideration, such as the quality and speed of combustion, this the latter being directly linked to the melting point of the paraffin. For example, EP-A-0 860 472 describes a paraffin composition for a candle, the paraffin having a melting point between 45 ° C and 65 ° C. The objective sought is, in fact, to obtain complete combustion, but the slowest possible of the combustible mass, including the long of the glass wall, with an illuminating and smokeless flame, and this despite the low combustion speed sought.

To obtain a uniform fusion of the entire surface top of the candle, not just a portion of it surface adjacent to the wick, so it is necessary to lower so significant the melting point of the paraffin used for the candle making. However, industrially, we do not have usually no paraffin responding perfectly satisfying this condition and, to further lower the paraffin melting point essentially constituting the candle it has been considered to incorporate into this commercial grade paraffin a liquid combustible compound. This makes it possible to melt the candle along its entire upper surface, even in contact with the wall of glass of the verrine, which is only possible because the candle is housed in a glass enclosure or in any other type of similar container. Indeed, if this composition was used in isolation, for example in the form of a candle, the liquid composition would flow on the side faces of the candle.

However, a candle composition is obtained, which burns in a regular manner by producing a luminous flame, of a satisfactory height, and without smoke, which is not likely to go out at following an insufficient air supply.

In practice, however, it can be seen that the speed of combustion then becomes too high, reducing the service life of the candle, and it turns out to be necessary to incorporate, in the composition of paraffin, an additive capable of reducing its burning speed, without however alter the ability of the candle to melt at low temperature, nor the quality of its combustion, in particular, the absence production of black smoke.

A careful balance must therefore be respected between the quantity of the combustible liquid compound introduced into the basic paraffin composition and the content of this composition in combustion retarder.

We do not know today, in the technique, to manufacture verrines that can burn continuously for more than 10 days, and preferably more than 12 days. More precisely, we do not does not have, on the market, paraffin compositions, alone or in mixing, possibly with additives, which allow directly the relatively long combustion times claimed by the consumer. Solutions have been proposed to slow down the combustion as in FR-A-2 798 723 or in WO9923416, using mechanical devices housed, for example, at the level of the wick, but without being able to reach the combustion times cited above.

It is this problem which the present proposes to solve. invention and it aims to propose for this purpose a composition of paraffin usable as candle in verrines, or any other type container, relatively large section, which lends itself to a very slow and perfectly regular combustion, and whose flame causes the fusion along its entire upper surface, even when the glass enclosure has large transverse dimensions, without causing smoke emission.

The invention also aims to provide such a paraffin composition, which, when used in a verrine or container large dimensions, has a burning time largely higher than that of the compositions of the prior art.

The invention finally aims to provide a composition of this type, able to burn over long periods without risk of extinction and without smoke production.

  • environ 5 à 25% en poids d'ester méthylique d'au moins un acide gras, destiné à abaisser le point de fusion de la paraffine ;
  • un copolymère de type monooléfine-ester vinylique, destiné à limiter la vitesse de fusion de la paraffine, dont la teneur en poids dans la composition de paraffine est inférieure à 10% et, de préférence, inférieure à 7,5% ;
To this end, the subject of the invention is a paraffin composition which can be used as a candle with a long burning time, characterized in that it comprises:

  • a complement to 100% by weight of the composition consisting of at least one paraffin having a melting point of less than 65 ° C, and preferably less than 58 ° C, and optionally, the usual additives in such compositions.

As the methyl ester of at least one fatty acid, it is possible to advantageously use a mixture of rapeseed methyl esters.

Le copolymère utilisé du type monooléfine-ester vinylique est avantageusement un copolymère d'éthylène vinylacétate ou en abrégé E.V.A..The copolymer used of the monoolefin-vinyl ester type is advantageously an ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer or for short E.V.A ..

The additives used may be present in amounts generally less than 10% and preferably less than 5% in weight of the paraffin composition and include a colorant, a perfume, insecticide, agent for improving the surface finish of composition or others.

The complement to 100% of the composition is carried out with a paraffin of petroleum or other origin, with a low melting point below 65 ° C, and preferably less than 58 ° C, measured according to standard NFT 60-114.
