Definitions
- the present invention relates to an aqueous foam composition consisting of an optimized combination of surfactants and water-soluble polymers.
- the applications of such a foam according to the present invention are diverse, for example for personal care, agricultural applications, fire fighting, underground work, such as soil consolidation and operations in wells drilled in the sub - soil: drilling, reservoir treatment, production of hydrocarbons.
- aqueous foam is known to replace a well fluid circulating through a lining of tubes lowered into a well drilled in the ground.
- the density of the aqueous fluid used is too large for the nature of the rock, creating too high a hydrostatic pressure with respect to the resistance to fracturing of the rocky zones crossed by the drilling.
- Document US-5513712 describes a drilling process in which a foam is used comprising a polymer of the non-crosslinked acrylamide type and a surfactant, but does not describe a stable and optimized foaming composition by obtaining synergy between a polymer and a specific surfactant.
- the present invention relates to a foaming composition based on water comprising at least one surfactant and one polymer.
- the surfactant and the polymer have charges of opposite sign.
- the Applicant has demonstrated that, surprisingly, it was possible to control the production of a stable foam, from a composition optimized in concentration of surfactant, if a polymer or a copolymer of charge of opposite sign to that of the charge of the surfactant.
- a cationic polymer or copolymer is combined; with a cationic surfactant, an anionic polymer or copolymer is combined.
- anionic surfactants it is possible in the present invention to use all the conventional anionic surfactants, such that the anionic function is:
- - carboxylates ⁇ soaps of alkali metals, alkyl or alkylether carboxylates,
- N-acylamino acids ⁇ N-acylglutamates, ⁇ N-acylpolypeptides,
- - sulfonates ⁇ Alkylbenzenesulfonates, ⁇ Paraffinesulfonates, ⁇ ⁇ -olefin sulfonates, ⁇ Petrolol sulfonates, ⁇ Lignosulfonates, ⁇ Sulfosuccinic derivatives, ⁇ Polynaphtylmethanesulfonates, o Alkyltaurides.
- - sulfates o Alkylsulfates, ⁇ Alkylethersulfates,
- phosphates o Monoalkyl phosphates, o Dialkyl phosphates
- cationic surfactants there may be mentioned:
- a has a fatty chain, for example, derivatives of alkyltrimethyl or triethyl ammonium, derivatives of alkyldimethyl benzylammonium
- ⁇ has two fatty chains
- ⁇ is part of a heterocycle , for example, derivatives of pyridinium, imidazolinium, quinolinium, piperidinium, morpholinium.
- anionic polymers can be used according to the present invention, for example: - synthetic polymers or copolymers derived from: anionic monomers containing carboxylate or sulfonate or phosphate or phosphonate groups, such as the acrylate, methacrylate, itaconate monomers, 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-propane sulfonate, 2-methacryloyloxy ethane sulfonate, 3-acrylamido-3-methyl butanoate, styrene sulfonate, styrene carboxylate, vinyl sulfonate, salts of maleic acid.
- anionic monomers containing carboxylate or sulfonate or phosphate or phosphonate groups such as the acrylate, methacrylate, itaconate monomers, 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-propane sulfonate, 2-methacryloyloxy ethane sulfonate, 3-acrylamid
- - natural polymers such as: negatively modified cellulose derivatives, of the CMC type, xanthan, alginate type polysaccharides, negatively modified starches, negatively modified galactomannans. All the conventional cationic polymers can be used according to the present invention, for example:
- - synthetic copolymers derived from: cationic monomers and neutral monomers (described above).
- - natural polymers positively modified starches, chitosans, positively modified galactomannans, positively modified cellulosic derivatives.
- the surfactant can be cationic at a concentration of less than about 5-10 " 3 mol / l, and the polymer can be anionic.
- the surfactant can be anionic at a concentration of less than approximately 5 10 ⁇ 3 mol / l and the polymer can be cationic.
- the anionic polymer can be a copolymer of the AM / AMPS type, the content of the charged part of which can be between 5 and 40 %, and preferably between 10 and 25%
- the surfactant can be of the DoTAB type.
- the anionic polymer can be a negatively modified natural polymer, for example of the CMC type.
- the cationic polymer can be a copolymer of the AM / MAPTAC type, the content of the charged part of which can be between 5 and 40% and preferably between 10 and 25.
- the surfactant can be of the SDS type.
- the invention also relates to a method for manufacturing a foam from water, at least one surfactant and at least one polymer.
- a surfactant and a polymer or copolymer of opposite charge are combined, and the polymer concentration is determined to obtain a stable foam with the lowest possible level of surfactant.
- the polymer concentration can be determined as a function of the charge rate of the polymer and the concentration of surfactant used. Given the electrostatic nature of the interactions between polymer and surfactant, their respective concentrations may be a function of the ionic strength of the medium.
- the foaming solution can also, like any well fluid (drilling, completion and workover), contain solids (cuttings, neutral colloids, ...) or other uncharged water-soluble polymers, anti-corrosion additives, ...
- volume of VM foam formed from a given volume of foaming solution and defined stirring conditions, which makes it possible to characterize the foaming capacity of the solution
- the viscosity was measured on the Newtonian plateau, using a low gradient viscometer.
- the foaming solution consists of at least a mixture of at least one surfactant with variable concentration, at least one water-soluble polymer also with variable concentration, and water.
- the pH is adjusted to approximately 9 for all the tests.
- the foam is obtained from 200 ml of foaming solution by stirring with a whisk. The rotation speed is fixed at 2000 rpm. As a rule, the stirring time is around 2 minutes, which is enough to obtain a homogeneous foam, as well as a maximum volume.
- the foam obtained is poured into a graduated glass funnel and the volume of drained solution is noted as a function of time.
- the drainage speed is defined from the empirical equation which describes the evolution of the drainage curves (Bikerman jj 1973):
- V Vod-exp (-kt)) V the drained volume (cm 3 )
- VQ the volume of the initial solution (cm 3 ) t time (minute) From this equation, we determine k, flow constant (min - 1 ).
- the drainage speed VD is defined by
- VD kV (2 (cm ° vmin.) The lower the VD, the more stable the foam.
- DoTAB Dodecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide
- SDS sodium dodecyl sulfate
- Test 1 Cationic surfactant only (DoTAB)
- the foam can form, thanks to the interactions between charge, at concentrations below 5.10 " 3 mol / 1 of surfactant, in particular for concentrations of 5.10 -5 and 5.10" 4 mol 1 of surfactant. From and above 5.10 " 3 mol / 1 of surfactant concentration, the foam does not form because there is precipitation, probably due to the too strong interactions between the charged polymer and the surfactant.
- a polymer of the AM / AMPS-75/25 type shows the importance of the opposite charges between surfactant and polymer to form a foaming composition.
- the foaming composition is very optimized since a volume of large and very stable foam given the low drainage speed measured.
- the volume of foam is comparable, but with a quantity four times less of surfactant and, moreover, by obtaining a better stability.
- Test 4 Cationic surfactant DoTAB and carboxymethylcellulose (AQUAPAC manufactured by the company Aqualon)
- Test 8 SDS anionic surfactant and cationic polyacrylamide AM / MAPTAC 90/10
- Test 9 SDS anionic surfactant and cationic polyacrylamide
- the addition to the foaming composition of simple electrolytes makes it possible to partially screen the interactions of electrostatic origin.
- the surfactant concentrations can be higher without precipitation.
