Abstract

An electromechanical defrost control system (10) for a refrigerator which uses the compressor cycling thermostat (14) to incrementally advance a ratchet (20) each compressor cycle. The ratchet (20) drives a cam (18) which closes a defrost heater selector switch (16) when a predetermined accumulated number of compressor cycles have occurred. Upon the compartment being heated, the thermostat (14) incrementally advances the cam (18) which returns the selector switch (16) to the compressor operating position and de-energizes the defrost heater (25).
