Definitions

  • the invention relates in particular to the coating or printing of a plastic film with water-containing or aqueous coating media, solvent-containing coating media such as ethanol, methanol, isopropanol, xylene, butanone, methyl ethyl ketone, dimethylformamide, methyl glycol acetate and tetrahydrofuran or mixtures of aqueous and solvent-containing coating media, UV-curable Varnishes or paints as well as PVC pastes.
  • the invention relates to the coating of a plastic film with a water-containing coating medium, in particular the printing with a water-soluble ink.
  • Plastic films are already coated in large quantities in the production of data carrier tapes, such as audio and video tapes, with solvent-based and in particular with water-containing coating media which contain the particles relevant for data storage.
  • the plastic films are guided over roller sections and may be heated to relatively low temperatures due to the shrinkage. These low temperatures make very long drying distances, for example up to more than 160 m, necessary for the effective drying of the coating medium.
  • DE-A-37 29 450 discloses a method for coating a film strip on both sides, two strips being connected to one another at the edges, which are then called Run sandwich or laminate through a covering tape, after which a treatment of the coated layer takes place and finally the two tapes, which are only connected to one another at the edge, are separated from one another by cutting off the connecting edges, so that, according to DE-A-37 29 450, the final product is finally two tapes coated on one side are present.
  • DE-A-36 05 426 discloses a process for the surface finishing of polyethylene films. A color is applied to a printing film which is applied to a support made of metal or paper. When transferring the printing film to a polyethylene film, it is pulled off the backing material.
  • US-A-2 594 290 describes a transfer printing process in which the coating of the plastic film with the coating medium takes place at the same time as the film is deposited on the endless conveyor belt.
  • the film is cooled by a cooler after coating and the coating medium is dried (by a drying machine) before it is coated onto the film deposited on the conveyor belt.
  • the invention is therefore based on the object of providing a process for coating or printing a plastic film with aqueous coating media, solvent-containing coating media or mixtures of aqueous and solvent-containing coating media, UV-curable lacquers or paints and PVC pastes, which is suitable for Screen, flexographic, rotogravure and offset printing as well as coating and varnishing including lamination are suitable and avoid long drying distances while maintaining an exact print repeat.

  • the film then still runs onto the surface with the internal tensions; however, since it does not yet show any adhesiveness, when its internal tensions are released as a result of the heating, it can initially "slide" on the base until the internal tensions of the film are released by heating, and then the lamination is carried out.

  • the temperature required to achieve the adhesiveness of the plastic film is generally too high a temperature for the actual coating or printing process, which is why cooling of the film must be provided in a next process step.
  • This cooling should expediently take place from the side of the film to be coated or printed. This allows cooling to be kept to a minimum.
  • drying of the coating medium or printing ink is required in the usual way, which means that if solvent-soluble printing inks are used, the solvent has to volatilize and if water-containing coating media or water-soluble printing inks are used here, they have to be eliminated of the water content.
  • This drying is expediently carried out by the action of heat from the coating or printed side, whereby the heat energy required for drying can be reduced to a minimum.
