Definitions
- the present invention relates to improvements made to fall arrest devices connected on the one hand to a harness worn by a user and on the other hand to a safety rope with respect to which the device locks automatically in the event of a fall of the user.
- fall arrest devices are well known and used in particular by construction workers. When the worker is moving, the fall arrest device slides freely with respect to the rope, which is generally oriented vertically and by which it is secured against falls.
- the devices in question include means for disconnecting from the safety rope when the user leaves the site.
- Such devices are generally known comprising a rigid gutter of U-shaped cross section, one of the cheeks of which is pivotally associated with one of the branches of a bent axis, the other branch of which crosses a lever in two elements. articulated to each other by means of a hollow axis.
- the bent axis is free of notches formed in the extreme part of the cheeks of the chute and that it is rotated, it is possible to engage the chute of the device around a safety rope. Once this operation has been carried out, it is necessary to pivot the bent axis again so as to bring the articulated lever opposite the opening of the chute and to rotate the latter until its hollow axis falls in front of two holes made in the wings of the chute.
- Such a device has many drawbacks. First, it is expensive because it is complex and has many parts. In addition, it is necessary, when the user wants to be sure, to pivot the articulated lever and fold it between the cheeks of the chute. It is also necessary, and this has the most serious drawback, to place perfectly opposite the two holes of the wings of the chute and the hollow axis in order to engage the safety pin. It is easy to understand that this operation is delicate especially in unfavorable atmospheric conditions.
- each of the two cheeks of the chute has a blind L-shaped notch opening onto the edge of the corresponding cheek, in that the ends of the axis of articulation of the two elements of the lever protrude laterally to engage in said notches, in that the free end of the element of the lever which does not carry the cam is rotatably mounted about a sliding axis in a slide formed on an extension of one of the cheeks of the chute, in that this axis is loaded elastically in the direction opposite to that of the notches and in that a rocking latch carried by one of the cheeks of the chute is resiliently held in a position in which it closes the bottom of the notch on the corresponding cheek.
- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the device according to the invention in the open state.
- Fig. 2 shows how the articulated lever is folded before it is secured in relation to a safety rope.
- Fig. 3 is a section along III-III (fig. 2).

- Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section corresponding to FIG 5.
- Fig. 7 is a section along VII-VII (fig. 6).
- Fig. 8 is a view similar to that of FIG. 6, but showing the device according to the invention locked relative to the safety rope.
- Fig. 9 is a section on a larger scale along IX-IX (fig. 8).
- Fig. 10 illustrates the manner in which a polarizing finger closes the opening of the notch of one of the cheeks when the device is presented upside down.
- the fall prevention device essentially comprises, as particularly illustrated in FIG. 1, a chute 1 having in cross section the shape of a U with rounded bottom whose cheeks 10, 11 are parallel and a composite lever 2 rotatably mounted relative to an extension 10 a of the cheek 10, as will be better explained below.
- Each cheek 10, 11 is provided with an L-shaped notch referenced respectively 10 b and 11 a .
- the two notches in question are exactly opposite one another.
- Each notch has an oblique branch opening onto the free edge of each corresponding cheek and a blind branch roughly parallel to said free edges.
- the extension 10 a of the cheek 10 has a slot 10 c parallel to the geometric axis of the chute 1.
- the lever 2 comprises a first element 20 shown in two parts 20 a , 20 b but which could be unique.
- the two parts 20 a and 20 b are articulated around an axis 3.
- the free end of the part 20 a has a ring 20 ' a while the free end of the part 20 b carries a 20 ′ serrated surface cam b .
- the two parts 20 a, 20 b are provided with oblique bearing surfaces relative to each other and which allow a certain angular movement of said parts.
- the second element 21 of the lever 2 is produced in the form of a yoke in one end of which is engaged the part 20 b of the first element 20.
- An axis 4 passes through the element 21 and the part 20 b so that these two elements are articulated to each other. It is observed that the axis 4 projects laterally outside of each of the wings of the element 21.
- this element 21 is articulated around an axis 5 which crosses the slot 10 c and carries a head 50 outside the cheek 10 (fig. 3).
- This head is surrounded by a housing 10 d fixed to the outside of the cheek considered.
- a spring 6 which elastically loads the axis 5 in the direction of the end of the extension 10 a of the cheek 10.
- a roller 7 is mounted around the axis 5 with free rotation.
- a lock 12 is mounted to tilt relative to the cheek 11 of the chute 1 and is loaded by a torsion spring 8 so that in the free position it is held in the position of FIG. 1, that is to say that it closes the blind part of the notch 11 a .
- a finger 13 sliding freely in a flange 14.
- the two ends of the finger 13 include a thickening keeping it trapped in the flange 14.
- a torsion spring 9 is mounted around the axis 4 so as to load the part 20 b of the first element 20 of the lever 2 in a clockwise direction, for reasons which will be better explained further.
- the user of the device according to the invention begins by hooking a carabiner M or other hook in the ring 20 ' a . It passes the device around the vertical safety rope C which enters between the roller 7 and the bottom of the chute 1, so that this bottom cooperates over its entire length with the rope C.
- the following operation consists in subjecting the element 21 of the lever 2 to rotate around its axis 5 while maintaining the latter in the direction of the chute 1, so that the axis 4 penetrates into the oblique branch of the two notches causing the latch 12 to tilt to the left (fig. 4).
- the carabiner M acts suddenly in the downward direction on part 20 a of element 20 of lever 2 which pivots around its axis 3 and acts in the same way on part 20 b of said element 20 in order to apply the cam 20 ' b firmly against the cord C (fig. 9).
- the device slides very slightly down along the rope before the final immobilization of the user who has fallen.

Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to improvements made to fall arrest devices connected on the one hand to a harness worn by a user and on the other hand to a safety rope with respect to which the device locks automatically in the event of a fall of the user. Such types of devices are well known and used in particular by construction workers. When the worker is moving, the fall arrest device slides freely with respect to the rope, which is generally oriented vertically and by which it is secured against falls. Of course, the devices in question include means for disconnecting from the safety rope when the user leaves the site.
Such devices are generally known comprising a rigid gutter of U-shaped cross section, one of the cheeks of which is pivotally associated with one of the branches of a bent axis, the other branch of which crosses a lever in two elements. articulated to each other by means of a hollow axis. When the bent axis is free of notches formed in the extreme part of the cheeks of the chute and that it is rotated, it is possible to engage the chute of the device around a safety rope. Once this operation has been carried out, it is necessary to pivot the bent axis again so as to bring the articulated lever opposite the opening of the chute and to rotate the latter until its hollow axis falls in front of two holes made in the wings of the chute. It is then necessary to engage a pin in said holes and in the hollow axis and provide for an automatic locking of the latter in place. In the event of a fall, a cam pivoting around the hollow axis will jam the device with respect to the rope, preventing the user from falling.
Such a device has many drawbacks.
The improvements which are the subject of the present invention aim to remedy these drawbacks and to allow the realization of a Fall protection device that is economical and very simple to operate.
The apparatus according to the invention is mainly remarkable in that each of the two cheeks of the chute has a blind L-shaped notch opening onto the edge of the corresponding cheek, in that the ends of the axis of articulation of the two elements of the lever protrude laterally to engage in said notches, in that the free end of the element of the lever which does not carry the cam is rotatably mounted about a sliding axis in a slide formed on an extension of one of the cheeks of the chute, in that this axis is loaded elastically in the direction opposite to that of the notches and in that a rocking latch carried by one of the cheeks of the chute is resiliently held in a position in which it closes the bottom of the notch on the corresponding cheek.
The appended drawing, given by way of example, will allow a better understanding of the invention, the characteristics which it presents and the advantages which it is capable of providing:

The fall prevention device according to the invention essentially comprises, as particularly illustrated in FIG. 1, a
Each
The
On the outer face of one of the
It is observed that a
Le fonctionnement découle des explications qui précèdent :The operation follows from the above explanations:
The user of the device according to the invention begins by hooking a carabiner M or other hook in the ring 20 ' a . It passes the device around the vertical safety rope C which enters between the
2, it causes the
It is observed that the
4).The following operation consists in subjecting the
Continuing the movement, we arrive in the position of fig. 5 in which the ends of the
In this position, the cam 20 ' b is not in contact with the cord C, as illustrated in FIG. 6, so that the user can get on and off without the device according to the invention getting stuck with respect to said rope. In Fig. 6 and 7, it is observed that the
In the event of a fall, the carabiner M acts suddenly in the downward direction on
We observe in fig. 10 that if the user engages the device according to the invention with respect to the cord C upside down, the
