Definitions
- the invention relates to a cushion body, in particular for use as filler material in packaging or as edge and / or surface protection for objects to be packaged, and to a method and a device for producing such cushion bodies.
- upholstery bodies made of foamed plastics are already known, which are either small-sized, for example as flat shells or multiply bent rods, with which irregularly shaped cavities are also formed let fill up between the object and the packaging container, or as larger moldings which are adapted to the shape of the object to be packaged and the interior of the packaging container and are intended to keep the object immovable and protected against impacts in the intended position.
- upholstered bodies made of foamed plastic are not optimal, since they have to be manufactured by specialized companies and have to be delivered in larger quantities in order to reduce costs, which, however, in turn increases the storage costs in the packaging operation.
- the object of the invention is to provide an upholstered body of the type mentioned at the outset from a material that can be easily disposed of, and to provide a method and a device for producing upholstered bodies that enable the manufacture of upholstered bodies that can be easily disposed of and make their storage largely unnecessary .
- the upholstery body according to the invention comprises a section of a flat strip or sheet of paper or cardboard which is shaped into a three-dimensional spatial structure with shock-absorbing properties.
- Such cushion bodies protect an object surrounded by them during use and can be easily disposed of together with the other packaging material as part of the waste paper collection.
- a preferred embodiment of the invention provides that the structure can be elastically deformed to a limited extent, the section advantageously also being under a prestress which counteracts the deformation. It is thereby achieved that a deformation of the structure due to a pressure or shock load is opposed on the one hand, but the structure yields on the other hand with larger pressure or shock loads, its deformation dampens the pressure or shock loads and after the latter ceases to exist as a result of the elastic restoring forces returns to its original position.
- a pre-tensioning of the structure can be achieved in that the section is bent in such a way that its radius of curvature increases on at least one section section when subjected to a pressure or impact load.
- kinking of the strongly curved section can be prevented in that the strip has increased elasticity on the one hand and / or greater flexural rigidity on the other hand, the former, for example, by a larger proportion of a glue binder in paper or cardboard , and the latter can be achieved, for example, in that, according to an advantageous embodiment of the invention, at least one edge region of the section is flanged, folded, pressed or the like, preferably inwards towards the center of curvature.
- impressions serving as stiffening can be provided on the strip or section, which are expediently offset from one another in the longitudinal direction of the strip or section and also counteract a buckling of the paper or cardboard.
- the cushion body has particularly good shock-absorbing properties if it has a closed outline in a cross section parallel to the plane of curvature, i.e. if the two ends of the section are connected to each other so that a closed ring with an eye in the middle is formed.
- Another advantage of annular structures is that they fill a large cavity volume with a relatively low weight, so that shipping costs can be reduced.
- these are advantageously overlapped, preferably either in such a way that in the area of the overlap placed broad side surfaces abutting against one another, whereby the structure assumes an essentially annular outline, or so that two opposite edge regions of a broad side surface abut against one another, whereby the structure assumes a teardrop-shaped outline.
- the overlapping ends can be connected by gluing, stapling or embossing.
- a releasable connection can also be provided, with one end advantageously being designed as a tab which is inserted through a recess in the other end and cut in such a way that it hooks into it.
- a limited deformability of the annular structure transversely to the plane of curvature of the section can be achieved according to a further preferred embodiment of the invention by at least one fold running in the longitudinal direction of the strip or section, which advantageously enables the structure to be compressed by a certain amount of accordion transversely to the plane of curvature.
- the outline corresponds to a segment of a circle whose center angle for a corner protection for rectangular edges of an object is preferably 270 degrees, while it is expediently 180 degrees for surface protection.
- the ends of the arcuate section are expediently connected to one another by a straight section which forms the chord of the semicircle, while in the edge protection described they are preferably formed by two section sections abutting one another perpendicularly in the center of the circle, which are expediently parallel to one another from the center circular arc-shaped section are to be extended, with their front ends supported against the inside thereof and the broad sides of which are directed towards one another are connected by gluing, stitching or embossing.
- a first alternative solution according to the invention provides that a severed section of a flat strip or sheet of paper or cardboard is formed into a three-dimensional structure with shock-absorbing properties. Since the mechanical outlay required for this is very low, the cushion bodies can be made from paper or cardboard for the first time, if required, at the place of packaging, as is provided by a second alternative solution according to the invention.
- a section provided for the production of a cushion body is preferably removed from a magazine prior to shaping, separated from the free end of a rolled-up strip or punched out of a sheet. Then, according to a further preferred embodiment of the invention, in a shaping step transverse to its longitudinal direction over one of its broad side faces, it is bent into a U-shape and the opposing ends are connected to one another, at the same time flanging an edge section, applying fold lines and / or forming Impressions can be made.
- the finished cushion bodies are preferably ejected into a storage container by means of an ejector.
- the underlying object is achieved according to the invention in that it has at least one molding tool with two parts which can be moved toward one another while shaping a supplied section of a strip or sheet of paper or cardboard, and which are designed in such a way that that from the into the molding tool introduced section shaped structures after completion has the desired three-dimensional shape with shock-absorbing properties.
- a preferred embodiment of the invention provides that one of the parts is designed as a die and has a recess and that another part is designed as a stamp which presses the part into the recess of the die and against the surface of the recess, the part is bent.
- the surface of the stamp opposite the surface of the recess and adapted to it is shaped in accordance with an advantageous embodiment of the invention in such a way that the section is simultaneously provided with impressions and / or fold lines during the bending and / or is flanged at least in sections at its edge.
- the flanging of an edge section can expediently take place in that the recess has a somewhat smaller width than the section and a somewhat larger width than the stamp, so that one longitudinal side edge or both longitudinal side edges of the section are bent into the space formed between the stamp and the recess and with a suitable shape in the area of the space in the edge area with a flange.
- the device has at least one stapling tool, which is arranged in the region of the ends of the bent section pressed into the recess and, after the stamp has been withdrawn, can be moved or pivoted transversely to its direction of movement bar is in order to press the ends of the section against one another and to glue or emboss them with one another, or to push a tab arranged on one end through a recess at the other end.
- the device can either have a magazine for holding sections which have been expediently punched out of a web or a sheet of paper or cardboard in an upstream device, the magazine preferably being designed as an exchangeable magazine.
- a supply roll can be provided for a rolled-up strip of paper or cardboard, from which the strip is pulled off and fed to a knife by means of a controllable feed device, with which the part to be deformed is separated from the strip.
- the upholstery body 2 shown in the drawing consists of a section 4 of a flat strip 6 made of paper or cardboard, which is shaped into a three-dimensional spatial structure with shock-absorbing properties.
- the section 4 used to form the upholstery body 2 shown is flat before it is shaped and has a rectangular outline with two opposite broad side surfaces 8, 8 ', which are delimited by two longitudinal side edges 10 and two broad side edges 12.
- the section 4 is bent over one of its broad side surfaces 8, two end faces 14 adjoining the broad side edges 12 being connected to one another in such a way that the structure formed from the section 4 unites in a cross-sectional or curvature plane parallel to the curved longitudinal side edges 10 has closed outline.
- the material thickness of the section 4 is matched to the deformability of the paper or cardboard used, and is chosen so that the section 4 does not kink even at the most curved point, even if it is at this point with the usual handling of an object packed in upholstered bodies is subjected to pressure or shock loads acting thereon.
- the section 4 is deformed by pressure or impact loads, its elastic restoring force ensures that it then returns to its original position.
- the upholstery body 2 can consist of a section 4 in which only the ends 14 are connected to one another, for example as shown in FIG. 8, but in which the section 4 is undeformed apart from the bending of the ends.
- Such structures automatically assume a cross-sectional shape in which the sum of the stresses of the bent prestressed section sections reaches a minimum.
- a cushion body 2 designed in this way absorbs energy while damping the impact, which energy is partly stored as reversible deformation energy and partly released as frictional heat.
- the strip 6 is deformed in its longitudinal direction in such a way that it experiences a compression 7 in the region of the longitudinal edges 10.
- it is provided in its central part 9 with a bulge 11 which, on the one hand, is very dimensionally stable and therefore enables effective cushioning of an object 32 to be cushioned, and on the other hand, due to its rounded shape, enables it to be gently applied to the object 32 to be cushioned.
- deformations of the strip 6 are conceivable.
- a single or polygonal deformation in the longitudinal direction of the strip 6 can lead to an effective compression 7 of the strip 6.
- the tension is fixed within the section 4 by the compression.
- the deformation of the section 4 can be brought about in the dry, moist and hot-humid state, depending on the one hand on the thickness and on the other hand on the consistency of the strip 6. The stronger the strip 6 is in its consistency, the more difficult it is to deform in the longitudinal direction. but the stiffer its shape and the better its inherent damping effect.
- a further great advantage of the deformation of the section 4 in the longitudinal direction is that the section 4 also has a strong damping effect if a connection of the broad side edges 12 provided in the area of the front ends 14, 14 'should open. Even with unconnected ends 14, 14 ', the section 4 encloses a large volume which serves to cushion the packaged article 32.
- the two end faces 14, 14 'of the section 4 are detachably connected to one another in the upholstery body 2 shown in FIGS. 8 and 8a.
- the section 4 there has, in the area of its one end 14, a slot-shaped incision 21 parallel to the broad side edge 12, through which the other end 14 ′ formed into a tab 23 is inserted, the tab 23 becoming hooked in the incision 21 by bending one or more tab areas and is thereby held.
- a recess 44 it is also possible for a recess 44 to be punched into one of the two opposite broad side edges 12, as shown in FIG. 8a.
- a locking piece 45 is hooked into this recess 44, which protrudes from the opposite broad side edge 12 'into the recess 44 and locks it with respect to the broad side edge 12'.
- the locking piece 45 can be cut into the broad side edge 12 'with the help of incisions 46, 46' and pivoted in the direction of the recess 44. In this way, the two broad side edges 12, 12 'are locked against one another with the aid of the locking piece 45.
- a lock can also be generated in that a window 47 is punched into one of the broad side surfaces 8.
- a locking hook 48 which is produced from the opposite broad side surface 8 'and which locks the two broad side surfaces 8, 8' against one another, projects through this window 47.
- section 4 can be flanged in whole or in sections in the region of one or both longitudinal side edges 10, as shown in FIGS. 1 to 5 and 7.
- the upholstery body 2 can, as shown in FIGS. 5 to 7, alternatively or additionally be provided with fold lines 18 which, in the illustrated upholstery bodies 2, run parallel to the longitudinal side edges 10 over a partial region of the broad side surfaces 8 (FIG. 6) or extend over the entire length of the section 4, so that they run around the cushion body 2.
- the fold lines 18 cause the cushion body 2 to be compressed to a certain degree like an accordion when subjected to pressure or shock loads perpendicular to the plane of curvature, while at the same time stiffening in a direction parallel to the plane of curvature becomes.
- section 4 can be provided with flat trough-shaped impressions 19, as shown in FIG. 4, which in particular reinforce the curved section section 22 and thus also counteract a kinking thereof.
- cushion bodies 2 can be produced, in particular with the shapes shown in FIGS. 1, 2, 5, 6 and 7, in order to completely fill voids between one or more objects to be packaged and the inner wall surfaces of a packaging container
- larger cushion bodies 2 such as in particular shown in Figures 3, 4, 7 and 9, serve as edge or surface protection for objects to be packaged.
- the cushion bodies 2 have an outline in cross section in the form of a segment of a circle, the center point of which is 270 degrees for the edge protection shown in FIGS. 3 and 9, while it is 180 degrees for the surface protection shown in FIGS. 4 and 7.
- the overlapping end faces 14 of the section 4 form the flat section section 20, which connects the ends of the semi-cylindrical section section 22 to one another, in the area protection.
- four cushion bodies 2 are arranged on at least two side boundary surfaces 36 of the packaging container 30, depending on the width of the object and the cushion body 2, in such a way that they, like shown in Figure 9, with its partially cylindrical section 24 against a side wall 38 and the bottom 40 or the lid 42 of the packaging container 30, while the two straight sections 26 abut against the lateral and upper boundary surfaces 34 of the article 32.
- the two other boundary surfaces 34 can each be padded with a surface protection, as shown in FIG. 4, which preferably also lies with the straight section section 20 on the object 32 to be packaged (not visible in FIG. 9).
- the devices shown in FIGS. 10 to 13 essentially consist of a molding tool 48 with two parts, one of which is designed as a die 50 and is essentially stationary, while the other is designed as a punch 52 and into a cross section U-or V-shaped recess 54 of the die 50 is displaceable, a section 4 being bent in a U-shaped or V-shaped manner between a surface of the die 52 facing the die 50 and a surface of the die 54 facing the die 50 and possibly with a flange 16 , is provided with fold lines 18 and / or with impressions 19.
- the devices also have a stapling tool 56 which is arranged in the region of the ends 14 of the bent section 4 pressed into the recess 54 and essentially consists of a pressure or embossing stamp 58 which transversely after the stamp 52 has been withdrawn from the recess 54 is displaceable (FIG. 10 to 12) or pivotable (FIG. 13) in its direction of movement 60 against an abutment 62, the ends 14 of the portion 4 remaining in the recess 54 projecting beyond the recess 54 being pressed against one another while connecting them.
- an adhesive connection can be realized, for example, in that the strip 6 is completely or partially coated on one side with water glass or with, for example, a hot-melt adhesive trained adhesive is coated, the pressure and embossing die 58 and the abutment 62 being heatable in the latter case, so that the hot-melt adhesive is heated during the stitching process and, after cooling, holds the two ends 14 together.
- the paper strip 6 required for shaping the cushion bodies 2 is wound onto a supply roll 64, from which the strip 6 is pulled off by means of a feed device 66 and fed to the molding tool 48.
- the feed device 66 provides a step-by-step feed of the strip 6 in synchronization with the movement of the molding tool 48 and the movement of the stapling tool 56, and with the movement of a knife 68 to separate the individual sections 4 from the strip 6.
- the sections 4 can also be cut off from a strip 6 or from a paper or not shown before they are fed into the mold 48 Cardboard sheets are punched out and temporarily stored in a magazine, preferably in the form of an exchangeable magazine, until they are removed individually by the feed device and fed to the molding tool.
- the punch 52 is connected to the knife 68 in the exemplary embodiments shown in FIGS. 10 and 11 and is moved together with the knife 68 transversely to the direction of advance of the strip 6, in the device shown in FIG. 12a there is a knife separated from the punch 52 68 provided.
- the strip 6 is fed with the aid of the plunger 52 moved in the feed direction, which pushes the strip 6 into the recess 54 with the aid of a stopper or driver 70 as it moves towards the die 50, the section 4 in this case is only separated from the strip 6 when it is already in the recess 54.
- the stapling tool 56 there consists of a pivotable clamping jaw 72, which is mounted in the die 50 and forms part of the surface of the recess 54 during the advance of the stamp 52 and, after the stamp 52 has been withdrawn, is pivoted against the abutment 62 which is used in this device is formed by the opposite surface of the recess 54 in the die 50.
- the finished cushion body can be ejected, for example, with the aid of an ejector 74 (FIG. 12a) transversely to the direction of movement of the die 52 and transversely to the direction of advance.
- upholstery bodies 2 which are designed according to FIG. 16, for example in the form of a pot 76, have proven to be particularly effective.
- This pot 76 is provided with a bottom 78, which can be flat or curved. Any curvature 79 that is present points in a direction that faces away from an interior 80 that is surrounded by a wall 82.
- the wall 82 is provided with folds 84 which, as a rule, extend irregularly over the wall, but which run parallel to a longitudinal axis extending through the pot 76 from an upper edge 86 in the direction of the bottom 78. These folds 84 bring into the walls 82 an elasticity effect, which lead to an optimal cushioning of an object 32 to be packaged.
- the rigidity of the cushion body 2 is predetermined by the floor 78.
- the upper edge 86 can be designed in the form of tips, the number of which is predetermined by a blank 88 cut from a strip 6.
- This blank can be designed as a rectangular or square section 4 of the strip 6, the four corners of which form the tips 90 after the deformation to form the pot 76.
- This cushion body 2 which is designed as a pot 76, not only has an excellent property for cushioning an object 32 to be packaged, but also has considerable advantages with regard to cheap manufacture.
- This pot 76 can expediently be produced in a simple manner in a device 94 of the type shown in FIG. This has a supply roll 64 on which the strip 6 to be processed into cushion bodies 2 is wound. This strip 6 is guided over a guide plane 96 in the direction of a deformation bore 98 which extends through a processing table 100 in the vertical direction.
- a plunger 104 displaceable in the direction of its longitudinal axis 102 can be lowered, the cross section of which is approximately twice the thickness of the strip 6 smaller than a cross section of the deformation bore 98. It is primarily thought that both the deformation bore 98 and the stamp 104 also have circular cross sections. However, other cross-sectional shapes are conceivable.
- This stamp 104 has a drive, not shown, by means of which the stamp 104 is inserted into the deformation bore 98.
- the drive is dimensioned so that the stamp 104 deforms a blank 88 separated from the strip 6 into a pot 76 when it penetrates into the deformation bore 98.
- This blank 88 is separated with the aid of a knife 106 from the strip 6 brought up via the guide plane 96.
- the knife can be moved perpendicular to the direction of the guide plane 96.
- At its lower end facing the processing table 100 it has a cutting edge 108 which, when the knife 106 is lowered, penetrates into a guide slot 110 and thereby separates the blank 88 from the strip 6.
- the stamp 104 is lowered so far in the direction of the processing table 100 that it fixes the strip 6 on the processing table 100 with its lower limit 112 facing the processing table 100 holds. Immediately after the blank 88 has been sheared off, the blank 104 presses it into the deformation bore 98 and deforms it in the form of the pot 76.
- the plunger 104 expediently moves into the deformation bore 98 to such an extent that the pot 76 formed by the deformation is ejected from the deformation bore 98 at an outlet 114 opposite the guide plane 96.
- the stamp 104 can have a flat lower boundary 112, as shown in FIG. However, if the bottom 78 is to be designed in the form of a curvature 79, the lower limit 112 of the stamp 104 is provided with a corresponding rounding.
- an upper embossing inlet 124 can be fixed in its shape, for example in an octagonal shape.
- the embossing mold 122 can be set in any desired shape, for example circular.
- a deformation piece 130 which bulges out in the direction of the deformation bore 98, can be provided on the punch 104 and is detachably fastened to a shaft 132 adjoining it. Depending on the type of floor 78 desired, the deformation piece 130 can be selected and attached to the shaft 132.
- the slide-in plates 126 at the upper end 116 with a larger opening than in the region of the lower end 128.
- the slide-in plate 126 can also be shaped in a special manner at the upper end 116 so that the formation of the Folds 84 is acted on. For example, an even distribution of corners, for example in the form of an octagon 134, can ensure that the folds are evenly distributed over the entire circumference of the wall 82.
- cushion bodies can be produced at the same time by strip cutters and parallel arrangement of several devices.
- the upholstery bodies can also be produced in a larger number using the rotation process - analogous to the cycle process.
- a measuring unit 138 is provided with two rollers 140, 142 which are rotatably mounted about two axes 144, 146 which run approximately parallel to one another. The distance between the axes 144, 146 is selected depending on the diameter of the rollers 140, 142 so that a slot 148 is formed between the two rollers 140, 142, in which a raw material prepared in a conveyor unit 150 is pressed into the strip 6.
- a binder for example water glass or glue. This binder is fed into the conveyor unit 150 through an inlet 154 and mixed with the waste paper which is fed into the collecting container 152 into the conveyor unit 150.
- the raw material consisting of this mixture is conveyed by the conveying unit 150 in the direction of the slot 148 and introduced into the latter by a transfer device 156. In the region of the slot 148, the raw material is embossed into the strip 6.
- the shape of the slot 148 plays a crucial role in the shaping of the strip 6, which can either be made flat or with a bulge.
- curved strips 6 are used to manufacture cushion bodies according to FIG. 8b (these bodies can also be given their shape by pressing).
- the strip 6 formed in the slot 148 is guided away from the press unit 138 via a guide combination 158, for example in the direction of the processing table 100.
