A securing element 18 is inserted in such a way that the piston rod 10 of the gas spring 8 is axially fixed but detachable with the guide tube 1 connected is. On the piston rod 10 there is an approximately ring-cylindrical end position or stop damper 19 made of rubber, which rests with its underside against the upper race 13 of the axial ball bearing 12. If, on the other hand, the valve is opened by pushing the actuating pin 34 in, the total length of the gas spring can be changed by pushing the piston rod 10 into the housing 9 or by moving the piston rod 10 out of the housing 9.
- Such length-adjustable or lockable gas springs 8 are generally known, for example from DE-PS 18 12 282 (corresponding to US-PS 3,656,593 and JP-PS 846 405).
- the mode of operation is as follows, starting from the position shown in Fig. 1, in which the piston rod 10 is fully extended from the housing 9, so that the lifting device has its maximum length overall.

- Fig. 2 shows a variant in which a helical compression spring is not arranged between the collar 25 of the additional tube 20 and the end face of the guide bush 22. Rather, a helical compression spring 26a is supported on the one hand against the base plate 5 and on the other hand against the end stop 21 of the additional tube 20. This also causes the additional tube 20 to be acted on in the direction away from the base plate 5 of the guide tube 1. With the difference that the helical compression spring 26 is not present, the lifting device according to FIG. 2 is otherwise identical to that according to FIG. 1, so that only the lower section has to be shown.
- the overall spring characteristic of gas spring 8 on the one hand and helical compression spring 26 or 26a on the other hand is steeper.
- the housing 9 of the gas spring 8 is already relieved by the abovementioned forces on the stop damper 19. The length adjustment during path B is thus cushioned more or damped.
