Abstract

Calving device consisting of a support (5) which encompasses the whole of the rear end of the animal and a forked piece (6) hinged to this which extends into a pole along which a lever mechanism (1) slides. Ropes are attached to the hooves of the calf and the cow is helped by pulling on the calf with the lever mechanism (9) during the contractions.

Description

  • This invention is a tool which is used for calving. In difficult deliveries the animal must be helped. This is done by attaching ropes to the front or hind hooves of the calf and assisting the cow during the contractions by pulling on the calf up to a force of 180 N. This obviously takes more than one person. Therefore, delivery equipment has been brought into the trade to make things easier. This generally consists of a long tube on which there is a sliding lever mechanism. On one end of the tube there is a horizontal support which is placed on the cow's rump below the vulva. Such a structure is described in the German Patent 1 133 076. Its advantage is that one person has enough strength to operate it which means that difficult deliveries can now be done by one person. Its disadvantage, however, is that the horizontal support placed against the rump of the animal below the vulva is not very secure and only permits downwards traction (from a standing cow). When it is used for pulling upwards, which is necessary for example in a breech birth, the support slips downwards towards the udder. This also happens with very difficult deliveries and ones where the cow is lying but not stretched out. This means somebody has to hold the support in place while a second person operates the lever. The object of this invention is to produce delivery equipment of this type without the disadvantages mentioned above. In the delivery device described here the simple horizontal support is replaced by a curved tube which is placed against the animal and forms a complete, or almost complete, circle. The circle runs below the vulva of the animal, along the ischium to above the back of the animal's back. This makes slipping to the left or right up or down impossible. The support has two hinges attached to a forked end. The other end of the fork leads into a lever mechanism of the usual type so that this part can be moved up or down without the support moving. This allows traction to be placed on the calf both upwards and downward. The above object is achieved by means of a calving device as defined in the single Claim.
  • Further information about the invention is given in drawings showing its construction.
    • Fig. 1: Calving device of the usual type with lever mechanism (1) and single horizontal support (2).
    • Fig. 2: Calving device or the new type with lever mechanism and multiple support section (4).
    • Fig. 3: Schematic drawing of the multiple support section with the curved support tube (5) and the forked piece (6) hinged to it.
    • Fig. 4: Shows how the calving device is placed against the animal and the calf is pulled upwards.
    • Fig. 5: Shows how the calving device is placed against the animal and the calf is pulled downwards.

Claims (1)

  1. Calving device, comprising a support (4) which is mounted on a tube or pole along which a lever mechanism (3) slides, characterised in that the support (5) is curved and hingedly attached to a forked member (6) permitting an upward or a downward traction of the said pole or tube which is mounted on the forked member (6) and the said curved support (5) is shaped in such a way that, in use, it encompasses the whole of the rear end of the animal so that it remains firmly anchored on the animal's rear during traction in any of the above mentioned directions.
