Description

The invention relates to a device for opening a metal can according to the preamble of claim 1.

Devices for opening a can along the circumference of the can jacket embossing grooves are known.

From US-A-2753075 a tear tab is known which covers a v-shaped recess between the weakening grooves in the can jacket and hermetically seals it. The tab is connected to the jacket with a spot weld between the legs of the v-shaped recess. The v-shaped recess is sealed by an elastic sealant introduced between the tab and the jacket or by solder. A device of this type has the disadvantage that the can jacket must first be broken through and then sealed again. The manufacture of such a can is complex and its use for canned goods to be sterilized is not suitable.

From US-A-2806628 forming the preamble of claim 1, a can with a tear-open tab with a V-shaped hump embossed therein is known. The connection between the tab and the box is made along the v-shaped shoulder, which is formed by the hump. This known tear tab, in which to form a v-shaped welding zone or lens by a hump, i. H. an increase in a locally limited support of the flap on the can body places high demands on the positioning on the weakening grooves in order to achieve an optimal tear guarantee.

The object of the present invention is to provide an inexpensive, tear-proof device for opening a metal can, which avoids the disadvantages of the known arrangements.

According to the invention, this object is achieved in accordance with the characterizing features of patent claim 1. By using a material for the flap that has a higher strength than the material of the can jacket, it is ensured that when the flap is lifted, the sheet metal of the jacket tears first and the cracks run along the lines of weakness.

Further advantageous embodiments of the invention are described in the dependent claims.

Due to the poorer conductivity of the material of the tab, the jacket sheet is overheated when the tab is welded on and thus harder. When the tab is lifted, the jacket sheet breaks along the welding lens, the shape of the welding lens is therefore only of secondary importance.

By attaching two or three welding points, the flap can be welded on with little energy without the corrosion protection layer on the inside of the can being significantly affected.

The seam-like arrangement of the welding lens advantageously enables it to be covered by the seam protection lacquer.

If the tab is inserted into an embossing recess, a sheet metal blank equipped with such a tab can be processed on conventional welding machines without any adjustments. Two tightly spaced weakening grooves have the advantage that even if the crack unexpectedly breaks through the outer weakening groove, the opening does not fail because the crack can then follow the inner groove.

The invention is described in more detail with reference to illustrated exemplary embodiments. Show it:
  • FIG. 1 shows a perspective illustration of a can jacket,
  • FIGS. 2 and 3 each show a top view of a tab and the adjacent area of the can jacket,
  • FIG. 4 shows a section along line VV in FIG. 5,
  • FIG. 5 is a top view of the tab,
  • FIG. 6 shows a section along line VII-VII in FIG. 2.

In Figure 1, the jacket 1 of a can 2 without bottom and lid and the welded longitudinal seam 3 and two completely circumferential, parallel adjacent weakening grooves 4 are visible. A tab 6 is welded in the area of the weakening grooves 4. The welding lens 5 is essentially V-shaped, the tip 7 of the welding lens 5 pointing in the direction of the loose end of the tab 6.

In the enlarged illustration of the tab 6 in FIG. 2, four of them are fitted in pairs instead of two weakening grooves 4. The ends 8 of the welding lens 5 overlap the grooves 4 on both sides by a few tenths of a millimeter or somewhat more and are 1 to 10 millimeters away from the welding seam 3. In section VII-VII according to FIG. 6 it can be seen that the tab 6 can be embedded in a recess 9 which is stamped against the inside of the can. The surface of the can jacket 1 and the tab 6 are then preferably essentially flush with one another.

Aus der Figur 6 ist weiter ersichtlich, dass die Dicke SL der Lasche 6 grösser sein kann als die Dicke SM des Mantels 1.FIG. 6 also shows that the thickness SL of the tab 6 can be greater than the thickness SM of the jacket 1.

The outline of a protective lacquer layer 11 applied to the seam 3 on the inside of the can is indicated in broken line 10. The already applied, approximately 8-12 mm wide protective layer 11 covers the area of the welding lens 5 in the arrangement of the tab 6 according to the invention and also protects it from corrosion without additional effort.

A welding lens 5 having a tip 7 toward the loose end of the tab 6 can best be achieved by a projection welding. For this purpose, a V-shaped hump 12 is embossed, for example simultaneously with the punching out of the tab 6, i. H. a V-shaped elevation forming a contact surface to create a locally limited welding zone (Fig. 4/5).

The welding of a tab 6 designed in this way is carried out in a conventional manner with a projection welding device, specifically on a flat surface Sheet metal cut before it is rolled into a cylindrical hull and welded lengthways. To prevent tin from being bent onto the electrodes, a band-shaped intermediate electrode can be inserted, which is renewed after each weld.

In FIG. 3, the welding lens 5 consists of three welding points arranged in a triangle, one corner of the triangle pointing towards the loose end of the tab 6 and - as in the embodiment according to FIG. 2 - the beginning of the crack when the tab 6 is pulled off forms.

The course of the cracks is made visible in FIGS. 2 and 3 as a broken line 13. FIG. 2 also indicates that if the crack 13 “runs away” inwards due to a discontinuity in the outer weakening groove 4 (top) - the crack 13 continues along the inner groove 4 and the can 2 can be opened properly.

The tab 6 is preferably attached to the weld seam 3 on the side of the sheet metal edge 14 lying above. When welding the flap 6 onto the can jacket 1, a current intensity I is selected which is adapted for welding two objects of the thickness SL of the flap 6. As a result of the, however, smaller thickness SD of the can jacket 1, it is slightly overheated during welding and the material hardens along the welding lens 5. As a result of this embrittlement, when the tab 6 is lifted, the sheet metal first breaks along the welding lens 5 of the can jacket 1.

Instead of a tab 6 which is thicker than the sheet metal of the can jacket 1, a tab 6 made of a material of greater strength than that of steel can also be used. Suitable materials have z. B. Chromium-nickel steels and alloyed steels have been proven.

By using a tab 6 made of a material that is also tougher than the material of the can jacket 1, the thickness SL of the tab 6 can even be less than the thickness SD of the jacket 1. As a result, the impression in the jacket 1 is also less deep and thus simplifying processing.
