Abstract

A polishing disk or polishing roller includes a rigid carrier ring and a yieldable layer of textile material attached to the circumference of the carrier ring. So as to permit smooth polishing of a workpiece free of any smudges or smears, the yieldable layer consists of a plurality of single threads distributed over the periphery of the carrier ring; when the carrier ring is rapidly rotated, the threads extend with their free outer ends,-which preferably have a length from 30 to 50 cm,-substantially radially outwards under the action of the centrifugal force. The polishing disk is provided with border rings of textile material on its lateral ends; each border ring is separated by radial slits into single and mutually overlapping segments of textile material.

Description

16 angegebenen Gattung. The invention relates to a polishing disc or polishing roller of the type specified in the preamble of claim 1 or 16.

Polishing disks or rollers of this type are intended for use in polishing or buffing machines, in which they are rotated rapidly for polishing, polishing, lapping or clarifying the surface of prepared workpieces and provided with a polishing or clarifying agent in their free peripheral surface. The compliant layer on the disc or roller circumference has so far mainly consisted of completely round, fabric sheets which are either loose or quilted together. For the clarification, the finest fabrics made of wool or cotton are mainly used, which should adapt to the contours of the workpiece to be machined as well as possible.

It has been shown that even the finest fabrics, due to the transverse threads they contain, exert a pressure on the workpiece surface, which makes cloud-free or shadow-free polishing difficult or even impossible. Likewise, it is not readily possible with the known polishing discs to polish or clarify complicated surfaces with narrow concavely curved grooves or pockets evenly and without leaving any traces.

Furthermore, a polishing disc of the type specified at the outset, known as an industrial brush, is known which consists of a rigid support ring and a layer fastened to the circumference of the support ring and made of textile thread material which is distributed over the circumference and essentially radially outwards and contains synthetic fibers. The bristles of the industrial brush are more or less stiff to the outside and are so tightly packed that they are radially aligned even when the disc is stationary. The thickness, length and material of the threads are chosen so that a sufficient inherent stiffness is ensured, which holds the bristle-like bristles in their radially extended position. It is therefore not easily possible to polish complex surfaces without leaving a trace.

The invention is therefore based on the object of providing a polishing disc or roller which ensures cloud-free or shadow-free clarification of even complicated surfaces.

To achieve this object, the combinations of features specified in claims 1 and 16 are proposed. Further advantageous refinements and developments of the invention result from the subclaims.

The invention is based on the idea that cloud-free clarification, even of complicated surfaces, is only possible if the grain contained in the clarifying paste is hammered evenly into the deepest corners of the workpiece surface, i.e. if there is a constant level of fogging that can be controlled via the speed local pressure is maintained. With the precautions according to the invention, this is achieved in that the individual threads do not hit the surface of the workpiece with a whip like length, and are pulled off over the disc as the disc continues to rotate. They deflect axially during pressing, so that the press values cannot add up, as is the case with polishing discs made of fabric sheets. If, according to the invention, the proportion of particle-repellent synthetic fibers, for example polyester fibers, increases in the axial direction from one side to the other, the workpiece surface can be freed from coarser bumps and impurities in the course of the clarification process by simply pushing it in the axial direction and with increasing synthetic fiber content be brought to a high gloss in the threads. Since the heat generated during the polishing process is far lower than before, a higher proportion of synthetic fibers, which ensure a long service life, can be used.

According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the individual threads driven outwards due to the centrifugal force are 30 to 50 cm long and 0.02 to 1 mm thick and give a thread density of 10 to 100 threads per cm 2 on the peripheral surface.

In order to hold the free thread ends even when the buffing wheel is stationary and during transport in a certain axial area, the buffing wheel can be provided at its front ends with limiting rings made of textile material, which can be separated into individual, overlapping strips of fabric by radial cuts. During operation, the limiting rings also have the task of stabilizing the air flow in the area of the polishing pad and of keeping the axial spreading of the thread layer within limits.

  • Fig. 1 eine Polierscheibe mit einer nachgiebigen Schicht aus Einzelfäden in schaubildlicher Darstellung;
In the drawing, two preferred exemplary embodiments of the invention are shown in a schematic manner. Show it:
  • Figure 1 is a polishing pad with a resilient layer of individual threads in a graphical representation.
  • Fig. 2 is a polishing pad corresponding to FIG. 1 with end rings.

The polishing discs shown in the drawing consist of a rigid support ring 10 and a resilient layer 12 fastened to the circumference of the support ring, which layer contains a multiplicity of individual threads 14 arranged distributed over the circumference of the support ring. With a rapidly rotating polishing disc, the individual threads are under the influence of centrifugal force so that their free ends point essentially radially outwards. The individual threads 14 are at their ends on the support ring side to form thread layers, not shown, with a thickness of about 10 mm connected by a spiral or ring-shaped bandage 15. Several of these thread layers are attached to the support ring surface at a mutual axial distance of about 20 mm, for example glued or quilted. In order to ensure a secure attachment to the support ring surface, the thread ring-side thread ends are wound onto the support ring surface in the circumferential direction before they are fixed there.

When the polishing disc rotates rapidly, the at least 10, preferably 30 to 50 cm long, free thread ends are driven outwards by centrifugal force in such a way that, despite the thread layers arranged at a distance from one another, they have a peripheral surface 16 with an approximately uniform thread density of approximately 10 to 100 threads per form cm 2 . Depending on the application, the twisted individual threads 14 have a diameter of approximately 0.02 to 1 mm and are spread apart like a brush at their free ends after prolonged use. A fiber mixture of 60 to 90% cotton or wool and 40 to 10% synthetic fibers, in particular polyester fibers, is preferably used as the thread material.

In the embodiment shown in FIG. 2, the polishing disc is provided at its front ends with limiting rings 18 made of textile material, which are separated by radial cuts 20 into individual, overlapping strips of material 22.
