Claims (32)

1. A method for providing a friction face on a steel or iron machine part (20,40,50) for creating high resistance to shear movement when said friction face is in contact with a smooth merallic material mating face (30,32,44,46) characterized by roughening said friction face ¢47) followed by non-depositing surface hardening rhe roughened friction face (30,32,44,46).
2. A method according to claim 1, wherein the roughening of the friction face (30,32,44,46) is performed to obtain a surface roughness equal or above approximately Ra 3 pm.
3. A method according to claim 2, wherein the roughening of the friction face (30,32,44,46) is performed to obtain a surface roughness between approximately Ra 3 pm and approximately Ra 20 pm.
4. A method according to claim 3, wherein the roughening is of the friction face (30,32,44,46) performed to obtain a surface roughness between approximately Ra 6 pm and approximately Ra 16 pm.
5. A method according to claim 1, wherein the roughening of the friction face (30,32,44,46) is performed by grit blasting a smooth face.
6. A method according to claim 5, wherein the grit blasting is performec. with size 0.25 to 3.0 mm grit.
7. A method according to claim 6, wherein the grit blasting is performec. with aluminum oxide grit.
8. A method according to claim 1, wherein the roughened face (30,32,44,46) is hardened to a value equal to or aoove 400 HV.
9. A method according to claim 8, wherein the roughened face (30,32,44,46,47) is hardened to a value between approximately 400 HV and approximately 3000 HV.
10. A method according to claim 1, wherein the roughened face hardening includes one or more of the following surface hardening processes: Plasma Nitriding, Chemical Vapor Deposition, Plasna Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition, Physical Vapor Deposition, Toyota diffusion process, Gas Nitriding, Ion implantation, Chrom.ating, Laser impregnation, Laser hardening, Flame hardening, or Induction hardening or quenching, having in common the ability establish adequate material face hardness without substantial deposition of a further material layer.
11. A machine part (50) comprising a first friction face (47) for mating with a second plastically deformable metallic face (30,32,44,46) of another machine cart (20,40) characterized in that said first friction face (47) is a roughened and non-depositing hardened steel or iron face .
12. A machine part (50) according to claim 11, wherein said second face (30,32,44,46) has a surface hardness that is less than the hardness of the first face (47).
13. A machine part (50) according to claim 11, wherein said second face (30,32,44,46) is substantially smooth.
14. A machine part (50] according to claim 11, characterized in being a part of a combustion engine.
15. A machine part (50) according to claim 11, wherein the surface roughness of the first fricoion face (47) is equal or above approximately Ra 3 pm.
16. A machine part (50) according to claim 11, wherein the surface roughness of the first face (47) is between approximately Ra 3 pm and approximately Ra 20 pm.
17. machine part (50) according to claim 11, wherein the surface roughness of the first face (47) is between approximately Ra 6 pm and approximately Ra 16 pm.
18. A machine part (50) according to claim 11, wherein the hardness of the first face (47) is equal no or above 400 HV.
19. A machine part (50) according to claim 11, wherein the hardness of the first face (47) is between approximately 400 HV and approximately 3000 HV.
20. A machine part according to claim 11, characterized in being an engrne base structure (10).
21. A machine part according to claim 11, characterized in being a main bearing cap (40),
22. A machine part according to claim 11, cnaracterized in being a shim (50) and having a well specified thickness (t) for dimensional adjustment purpose.
23. A machine part comprising two opposed external smooth faces (47) each of shape and surface area extension to mate a respective first friction surface of a machine cart according to any of claims 11 to 22.
24. A machine part according to claim 11, characterized in being a shim (50) and having a well specified thickness (t) for dimensional adjustment purpose and a first friction face on both sides of the shim.
25. A machine part according to claim 24, characterized in being a distance shim (50) for clamping of a main bearing.
26. A machine part according to claim 14, characterized in being a part of a 4-stroke diesel engine, preferably of the MAN® brand, or being a part able to replace such part.
27. A machine part according to claim 14 characterized in being a part of a 2-stroke longitudinally uniflow scavenged diesel engine, preferably of the MAN B&W® brand, or being a part able to replace such part.
28. A machine part according any of claims 11 to 27, characterized in being furnished with an electronic tag storing part specific information.
29. A machine part according to claim 28, characterized in a part's measured material analysis spectrum profile being comprised in the part specific information stored an the tag.
30. A machine part according to claim 28 or 29, characterized in data related to said machine part's installation and/or use history was read into the tag to be part of the part specdfic information.
31. A method for providing high static friction between mating metallic friction surfaces of two machine parts (20,40,50), said methoc. comprising providing said machine parts (20,40,50) with one or more sets of mating friction faces (30,32,44,46,47), one of said faces ¢30,32,44,46) in a set being smooth and the other of said set faces (47) in said set being steel or iron based and roughened and thereafter surface hardened by a non-depositing surface hardening treatment.
32. Use of a roughened and subsequencly non-depositing hardened steel or iron friction face engaging a smooth mating face of plastically deformable metallic material with a surface hardness value lower than that of the roughened and subsequently non-ceposicing hardened steel or iron friction face.
