Abstract

A process for applying phosphate coatings to steel workpieces involves contacting the workpieces with a nickel-free soln. contg. 2-20 g/l. Mn ions, 0.2-4 g/l Mg ions, up to 12 g/l Fe(II) ions, 5-50 g/l phosphate ions (calculated as P2O5) and 1-20 g/l nitrate ions, the phosphating soln. having a total points number of 20-150 and a Mn:Mg wt. ratio of 5-50:1.
