Es ist bekannt, daß zwangsbelüftete biologisch aktive Haufwerke wie z.B. Biofilterschüttungen - hier wird der zu reinigende Luftstrom durch eine biologisch aktive Schüttschicht (Kompost, Torf, etc.) geleitet - aufgrund der starken Durchströmung, Keime und Pilzsporen freisetzen können. Diese Keime und Pilzsporen können unter ungünstigen Umständen zu Gesundheitsgefährdung beitragen.
Gleichzeitig ist bekannt, daß durch starke Sonneneinstrahlung Biofilterschüttungen an der Oberfläche austrocknen, oder bei starken Regenfällen übernässen können, beides Effekte, die in der Regel unerwünscht sind.
