Coffin for cremation and burial (coffin-in-coffin system)
State of the art:

The coffins commonly used for burials and cremations are made of wood and/or chipboard. In both types of burial, the expensive and valuable raw material wood is destroyed by composting or burning. Metal coffins are very rarely used; they are only permitted for burials with special permission.

The following new developments have been announced:

a. Innovative cemetery project in Cologne with cement graves, air shafts and filters for faster decomposition and thus shorter burial times (SWF 3, 2/93).

b. Columbaria, aluminum coffins with a double bottom, with the possibility of triple occupancy after each removal of the bones and evaporation of the corpse fluid after a short rest period (television program "Spiegel TV" 3/93).

The invention specified in the claims is based on the problem of stopping the waste of wood, protecting nature and at the same time reducing burial costs without sacrificing a dignified burial according to ethical principles.

The problem is solved with the coffin-in-coffin system, whereby a reusable outer coffin (decorative coffin) contains an ecological inner coffin and only this inner coffin is destroyed during the burial.

The following advantages are achieved:

Annex 1a

Example: Coffin-in-coffin system

The starting point is the coffins made of solid wood or wood in the form of chipboard used today for cremation and burial.

The following example and the attached drawings are intended to show how the "coffin-in-coffin system" can be used to avoid wasting wood while still maintaining a dignified burial. There is no need for jewelry accessories or metal handles.

The "coffin-in-coffin system" consists of an outer coffin made of wood or metal with a removable lid (Fig. 1), which can be reused as often as required and in which the inner coffin made of recycled wood fiber (cardboard) (Fig. 3) is located.

The inner coffin is mounted on a stretcher with wheels (Fig. 2). The support surface for the inner coffin consists of rollers (Fig. 2). The stretcher is equipped with extendable handles on both narrow sides (Fig. 2). A collecting tray is attached under the stretcher. It is guided on a rail for insertion and removal (Fig. 2.1).

Particularly advantageous are the loading and unloading flaps on the narrow sides of the outer coffin (Fig. 1.1), whereby the lid flap can be opened upwards and the flap of the lower part downwards in order to insert or remove the stretcher with the inner coffin. One of the lower flaps (Fig. 1.2) is equipped with rollers and serves as a sliding surface for the inner coffin during cremation.

The inner coffin is made of recycled wood fiber (cardboard) and can be of different colors and decorated with ornaments.

It is foldable (Fig. 4 and Fig. 5); 2-part with removable lid or one-part with foldable lid. It has an inserted double bottom with transverse and longitudinal bulkheads for stability and to accommodate absorbent material in the gaps (Fig. 4.1).

The deceased is buried in an inner coffin made of cardboard. The dignified setting of the funeral ceremony (laying out, blessing, funeral procession) is preserved by the decorative outer coffin made of wood or metal, which can be reused as often as desired.
