The innovation relates to a panel-shaped piece of furniture with a surface coating made of plastic, synthetic resin or the like at least on the front side and with a thick edge made of plastic, which is glued to at least one narrow side perpendicular to the front side, creating a glue joint flush with the front side, and to which an external profile is milled.

The innovation is therefore based on the task of improving a panel-shaped furniture part of the type mentioned at the beginning by optically concealing the glue joint on the one hand by means of an appropriate profile design of the thick edge in the transition area to the coated panel side and on the other hand achieving optical color uniformity between the thick edge and the surface coating.

The particular advantage of a panel-shaped piece of furniture according to the innovation is that due to the right-angled connection of the lip formed on the thick edge with its outside, the glue joint is no longer visible. This is because a step is formed on the edge of the coated panel front towards the thick edge, which stands out visually compared to the glue joint and also causes a different incidence of light on the surface coating on the front and on the outside of the plastic material of the thick edge in the transition area, which creates the impression of color uniformity. The latter of course presupposes that the color of the thick edge and the surface coating on the panel front are identical or at least almost identical. With light, especially white surface coatings and thick edges, the visual impression of the disappeared glue joint and the color uniformity between the surface coating and the thick edge is astonishing.

The plate-shaped furniture part has narrow sides 5 running perpendicular to the front 1 and the back 3, onto which thick edges 6 are glued. With a typical plate thickness of 19 mm, the thick edge 6 is about 5 mm thick and is made of a continuous, homogeneous plastic material. On its two long edges facing the outside, it has convex curves 7 and 8, whereby in the embodiment shown, the curve 8 facing the back 3 merges tangentially flush with the rear surface 4. In principle, the thick edge 6 can also have the same profile in this area as on the long side at the top in the drawing.

The thickness of the lip 1o in cross section is only about 1/1 ϳ of the maximum thickness of the thick edge 6 and is therefore in the order of 0.5 mm. Just like the curves 7 and 8 of the outer profile of the thick edge 6, the contour of the inner edge 9 and the lip 1o are milled out of the solid material of an originally rectangular cross-section thick edge after the thick edge has already been glued to the relevant narrow sides of the workpiece. So that the milling tool can cut itself free, the lip 1o tapers from the inner edge 9 to its end edge 11 at an angle of inclination of about 5°. The width of the lip 1o in the width direction of the narrow side of the plate 5 is only about 1 mm, so that it is about 5% of the width of the narrow side of the plate of 19 mm.

The end edge 11 of the lip 10 is flush with an unavoidable glue joint 12, which occurs at the seam between the thick edge 6 and the coated front 1 and back 3 of the panel. Since the end edge 11 of the lip 10 ends with the outside of the surface coating 2 on the front 1 of the panel, the glue joint 12 is also in the plane of the outside of the surface coating 2, but due to the relatively thin lip 10 and the resulting step between the front 1 of the panel and the remaining area of the thick edge 6, it is practically not visible.
