Bekanntlich besteht eine der Hauptschwierigkeiten im Gebrauche starker Explosivstoffe für Projectile und Lufttorpedos darin, eine genügende Menge der Zündmasse, besonders Knallquecksilber, mit Sicherheit schleudern zu können, um eine vollständige Detonation des geschleuderten kräftigen Explosivstoffes zu erzielen. Wenn die Menge der Zündmasse genügend gering zur Erzielung der nöthigen Sicherheit gehalten wird, so ergiebt sich eine unvollständige oder eine Secundär-Detonation des Explosivstoffes. Die Theilchen des Fulminate werden dadurch mit einem Häutchen des aufgelösten Pyroxylins überzogen und so jedes Theilchen von dem nächsten durch eine Pyroxylinschicht getrennt, welche die Reibung der Theilchen an einander bei einem Schlag und die Abbröckelung derselben bei der Verarbeitung und dem Gebrauch verhindert. Die Bindung der Theilchen ist eine derartige, dafs die Masse mittelst Stahlmesser oder Scheere in Streifen zerschnitten werden kann. Es empfiehlt sich, die Mischung noch mit zweckmäfsig ebenfalls gelöstem Nitroglycerin, sowie mit einem Moderirmittel, besonders Nitrobenzol, Nitronaphtalin oder Gummi, zu versetzen. Letzteres setzt die Empfindlichkeit der Zündmasse gegen Schlag und Stofs noch weiter herab, ohne die Verbrennungsgeschwindigkeit zu beeinflussen. Alsdann wird (75 bis 85 pCt. der Masse) ein Fulminat, am besten Knallquecksilber, zugemischt. Das angewendete Lösungsmittel, als welches zweckmäfsig eine leichtflüchtige Flüssigkeit zu wählen ist, besonders Aceton, wird nunmehr verdampft. Die Consistenz, die Elasticität, sowie der Charakter, die Empfindlichkeit der hinterbleibenden Masse kann durch entsprechende Abänderung der Mengenverhältnisse der Bestandteile wunschgemäfs variirt werden.Nitroglycerin is thickened with pyroxyline to the consistency of natural gum.
