Description
Purification of iodine by sublimation The purification of the various known types of obtained raw iodine is carried out by a sublimation process the ash constituents, d. H. the non-sublimable impurities excreted will. On the other hand, the removal of the at the sublimation temperature presents difficulties volatile impurities and especially the moisture that is always present, since they are redeposited together with the sublimated iodine. To the distance of the water, mainly chemical desiccants have been used so far, however, their application is costly and time consuming. It has also been tried remove the condensation water through openings in the sublimation apparatus. However, iodine losses are unavoidable here.
The surprising observation has now been made that iodine vapors are retained by porous layers, through which water vapors and other volatile ones Diffuse impurities such as chlorine through it. As a result, the Use of porous layers in the sublimation apparatus, the separation of such Impurities from iodine without incurring any costs or losses.
Crude iodine with a relatively high chlorine content of 0.057 ° 1o Cl and with 0.5 ° 1o moisture is subjected to sublimation in a sublimation apparatus with a hood made of porous material. The sublimate is then completely free of moisture and contains only a minimal trace of chlorine.
