Description

Extraction of sulfur from sulphurous masses It is known to melt out the sulfur by means of hot water or pressurized steam. Further is known, those sulfur masses, as they are, for example, in the removal of hydrogen sulfide accumulate to regenerate with air or oxygen. During this regeneration falls a raw sulfur, the further processing of which the present invention is based relates, namely the invention extends to a method for obtaining Sulfur from such sulphurous masses as they are used in the purification of sulphurous substances Gases through slurries or solutions of iron compounds after subsequent Regeneration of these fluids can be obtained by oxidation. By treating such a mass with hot water at a temperature above the melting point of sulfur, the following substances are obtained separately: r. sulfur of a purity of about 98 to 99%, e.g. an aqueous suspension of iron hydroxide, 3. a solid residue consisting essentially of iron sulfide.

It has now been found that the formation of a residue of iron sulfide it can be avoided that simultaneously with the hot water also oxygen-containing Gases, but preferably pure oxygen, to act on the sulfur-containing Mass to be brought. The present procedure can now be used in the most varied of ways In a practical way, be it that the mass, which already contains water, indirect, e.g. B. heated by pressurized steam, and their oxygen or oxygen-containing Supplies gases, or be it that one also hot water of the specified temperature, therefore under a pressure of 3 to 5 atm. stands on the crowd together with oxygen or oxygen-containing gases to the effect. Also a combination these two modes of operation are of course conceivable. When performing the claimed process temperature applied can naturally within wide limits vary. But it must be so high that it reaches the melting point of sulfur.
