Beispiele sind Kabelverzweiger, Verstärker für Breitband-Kommunikations-Anlagen oder elektrooptische Wandler für zukünftige Lichtwellenleiter-Ortsnetze. Die Gehäuse be stehen meist aus Blech oder aus Kunststoff und sind häufig auf öffentlich zugänglichen Plätzen (Bürgersteig etc.) aufgestellt. Viele elektrische Systeme benötigen zusätzliche Stromversorgung. Bei starker Sonneneinstrahlung können sich derartige Gehäuse stark aufheizen, so daß im Innern Temperaturen von 60 bis 70°C erreicht werden. Wird eine Stromversorgung benötigt, so sind eigene Speisekabel vorzusehen. Wegen der möglicherweise auftretenden hohen Temperaturen müssen alle Teile im Gehäuse so ausgelegt werden, daß sie entprechend temperaturfest sind.
