Description
Process for the representation of tanning substances. It was found that valuable tanning substances are obtained when nitrogen oxides act on lignite leaves. It is advantageous to work in the presence of water or steam.
It is known to be on lignite or on its bituminous components Allowing nitric acid to take effect and thereby preserving tanning substances, but the The use of nitrogen oxides offers valuable advantages over that of nitric acid. You don't need the easily accessible nitrogen oxides to turn into cumbersome and expensive ones Way to convert to nitric acid. You can also use nitrogen oxides under substantially work in milder conditions, which is of particular importance in the present case is, because apparently less widely degraded products are obtained than with corresponding ones Treatment with nitric acid. Furthermore, the consumption of nitrogen oxides is much lower than that of nitric acid. The presence of air reduces the consumption of nitrogen oxides further; however, it is not essential for the reaction to take place necessary.
The action of nitrogen oxides on the brown coal can also be present of catalysts or carriers, such as. Ferrous sulfate, among others; it then proceeds more rapidly and more completely.
Beispiel i. The products obtained in this way can be used for tanning alone or in a mixture with other artificial or natural tanning agents. Example i. Zoo parts of finely powdered, moist raw lignite are made into a paste with a solution of 20 parts ferrous sulfate in Zoo parts water; the mixture is heated in the reflux condenser to initially 70 ° to 80 °, later 90 ° and nitrogen oxide mixed with air is introduced into the liquid with stirring until a sample of the reaction product is completely or almost completely soluble in alkali. The reaction product is filtered off with suction and washed with water. It consists of humic, mostly brown-colored substances with little or no solubility in cold water and acidic properties; they dissolve in alkalis; the alkaline solutions are precipitated by strong mineral acids, but not by dilute acetic acid. The solution acidified with acetic acid can be used for tanning directly or in a mixture with other artificial or natural tanning agents. Example e. 300 parts by weight of air-dry, humic brown coal are mixed in a suitable vessel with the addition of 30 parts of ferrous sulfate with about 300 parts of water to a paste and exposed to the action of nitrogen dioxide mixed with air while stirring. The gas is initially introduced at normal temperature; later this is slowly increased to 6o to 8o °. The contents of the vessel foam up and gradually become almost completely soluble in alkali. The reaction product is evaporated to dryness on a water bath, leaving a red-brown, solid product. The latter dissolves in a small amount of dilute caustic soda (apart from a small amount of iron hydroxide, which can be filtered off) and can be used for tanning in a slightly acidified form with acetic acid.
