In the past, little attention was paid to pollutants, especially in the air. On the one hand, people were not always aware of their effects on health and, on the other hand, suitable analysis methods were often lacking. This has now fundamentally changed, so that today the determination of pollutants in the air is of great importance.
Basically, the amounts of pollutants are very small, so that they have to be enriched in order to be able to be determined at all. Such enrichment is usually done with the help of an adsorbent, which is usually activated carbon, because it can be considered a jack of all trades due to its very broad pore distribution.
There are now two possibilities: firstly, the air can be sucked through a layer of adsorbents and secondly, the adsorbent can be exposed to the air in a suitable container, whereby the pollutants reach the adsorbent purely by diffusion. In the latter case, these are so-called passive collectors. They are used for workplace measurements, among other things.
Am Ende der Einsatzzeit wird ein spezieller AdapterThe principle of the passive collector, of which a 3 M product called OVM is a typical example, is practically always the same: the collector consists of a can filled with activated carbon, with the poured carbon being secured to the base of a plate by a safety net. Immediately above this is a diffusion membrane. The substances in the air environment that are in contact with the diffusion membrane penetrate this membrane and migrate into the activated carbon layer. At the end of the service life, a special adapter is

auf die Aktivkohledose aufgesetzt und ein Lösemittel in die Dose hineingepumpt, welches die aufgenommenen Substanzen aus der Aktivkohieschicht herauslöst, aus dem Döschen abgezogen und analysiert wird.placed on the activated carbon can and a solvent is pumped into the can, which dissolves the absorbed substances from the activated carbon layer, is withdrawn from the can and analyzed.
If the extraction is carried out in the collector itself, the process is cumbersome and requires the complete elution of large amounts of solvent. In addition, methods for increasing the extraction efficiency (e.g. ultrasound, microwaves...) cannot be used. If the activated carbon bed is removed in order to carry out the extraction outside the collector, carbon losses can occur. The object of the present invention was to make the process simpler and more economical.
The task is solved by replacing the activated carbon bed with a monolayer of granular or spherical activated carbon fixed on a strip-shaped carrier or with a strip of an activated carbon sheet, while maintaining the general principle of the passive collector.
The major advantages of the passive collector according to the invention can be summarized as follows:
The adsorptive material is completely and simply removed from the passive collector and sent to the laboratory. The laborious extraction in the collector is no longer necessary. Due to the flexibility and low thickness of the adsorptive material, only very small amounts of solvent are required for elution, which increases the concentration of the substances to be analyzed in the solvent preparation and increases the sensitivity.
Except for the adsorption layer, all parts of the collector are reusable. After replacing the adsorption layer, the collector is immediately ready for use again.

BLUCHERBLUCHER
The reusability and the comparatively much lower amount of solvent mean cost reduction and environmental relief.
The adsorption layer made of an activated carbon surface structure (fabric, fleece...) or a monolayer of granular, preferably spherical activated carbon is extremely homogeneous; the diffusion distance between the diffusion membrane and the absorbing layer is precisely maintained over the entire collector surface, so that no local falsifications can occur and reproducibility is improved.
The adsorption layer can be supported by a second adsorption layer, which allows an overload of the first layer to be clearly detected.
The specialist has many options for the adsorption layer. Activated carbon fabrics that are produced by carbonizing and activating fabrics, knitted fabrics and fleeces are very suitable. They are soft and supple and can be used as such. Another option is to reinforce the activated carbon fabric by ironing it onto an aluminum foil coated on one side with PE. Such a foil can also be used as a carrier for thermally fixed granular adsorbents, in particular activated carbon beads, which form a very uniform monolayer. Also suitable are carrier materials that are printed with a cross-linkable adhesive and then sprinkled with granular or spherical adsorbents. Here, too, a very uniform monolayer is present.
