Durch Vorbehandlung des Indikatorstreifens können bei Bedarf zusätzliche Informationen gewonnen werden, beispielsweise über pH-Wert der Ausscheidungen oder bestimmte Stoffwechselendprodukte. Im Bedarfsfall können daher medizinisch interessante Funktionen überwacht werden. Das Know-how für geeignete Indikatorsubstanzen ist aus der „trockenchemischen" medizinischen Diagnostik bekannt ( vgl. Teststreifen für Zucker oder Eiweiß im Urin ). Dies ermöglicht einerseits die Überwachung erkrankter oder gefährdeter Kinder, kann andererseits aber auch bei wissenschaftlichen Studien eingesetzt werden.
