Description
The coloring of plastics with insoluble dyes can be done in such a way that in the Plastic a color powder or a granulated or granular color base mixture is incorporated, which in addition to the dye, a generally high molecular weight product (plastic or resin) as Contains carrier for the dye. However, preference is given to using such granules because it is easier and cleaner to handle than a powdered paint that dusts and the processing machines very dirty. This explains why when coloring plastics nowadays everywhere, where it is possible to work according to the masterbatch process, the specialty of which is that from the insoluble dye, especially the inorganic pigment, and a high molecular weight Substance a basic mixture is prepared, optionally with the addition of on the intended use Matched additives, and these then in granulated or granular form in the material to be colored is incorporated.
The use of the Masterbaich process for coloring curable resins or thermosets and Here, especially of polyesters, difficulties that seem insurmountable have been faced up to now, which is why in this case the coloring is mostly done using colored powders or Color pastes were made and the associated processing disadvantages were accepted.
Wegen des verhältnismäßig hohen Anteils des Farbpigments in der PigmentgrundmischungIt has now been found that, surprisingly, resins which are formed on the action of formaldehyde on arylsulfonaiiiides, in particular toluenesulfonamide (and in particular the para-type), are particularly suitable as carriers for the insoluble dye to be incorporated into the curable resin to be colored. The above-mentioned sulfonamide resin has good compatibility or solubility in curable resins and has after its softening - the softening range is between 60 and 80 0 C - such low viscosity that the viscosity of the resins to be inked is changed only insignificantly. This can take up to 20wt .-% of the erfindungsgemal) used sulfonamide, which in turn can be prepared with up to 60 (Jew .-% color pigment to the invention Pigmentgrundniischung. The distribution of erfindungi'.geinäßen pigment masterbatch in the resin can be inked by During the further processing of the colored resin according to the working techniques known for curable resins (e.g. compression or injection molding), during which the resin is cured, the pigment base mixture according to the invention is distributed in the resin so evenly that there is no need to worry about streaks and cloudiness in the molding, because of the relatively high proportion of color pigment in the pigment base mixture
Any degree of coloration that occurs in practice can be used of curable resins can be achieved by the masterbatch process.
The sulfonamide resins used according to the invention are protected by the Monsanto company under the Brand name »Santolite« brought onto the market, whereby the toluenesulfonamide-formaldehyde resin is preferably used is called »Santolite MHP«.
As examples of the thermosets which can be colored using the pigment granules according to the invention the phenoplasts, aminoplasts and the alkyd and epoxy resins may be mentioned. Particularly good ones The invention also achieved results in the coloring of unsaturated polyester resins.
45Since the granulate resin has good solubility in the customary paint solvents (alcohol, esters, ketones, aromatics), the granulate according to the invention can also be used for coloring paints. The color is done by simply mixing it into the uncolored varnish. A special machine processing process is therefore not required. As in the other applications, the pigment granules according to the invention play the role of predispersing the pigment.
When a granulated or granular pigment mixture is mentioned in connection with the invention, this is to be understood as meaning any type of coarser, particulate product, for example also a flaky product.

En cadmium in a heated roll mill at about 70 0 C mixed. After cooling, the pigment base obtained is crushed to granules in a hammer mill and then mixed dry with the resin to be colored, which can also be in granule form, for example in a mixer, after which the mixture is further processed in a manner known per se.
Instead of the cadmium red used in the above example, any other pigment can also be used.
