Triangular book

The invention relates to a book.

Typically, books have an essentially cuboid shape, with the six surfaces being formed by a front and a back cover, a spine and three cutting surfaces. The book can be opened at the cutting surface opposite the spine, so that when the book is open, one sees two essentially rectangular book halves or book pages. Typically, text printed in such a book is oriented in lines aligned parallel to one of the edges of the book pages. In a normal textbook, the length of the lines is essentially constant, so that a rectangular, block-like text image is produced on the majority of the text pages in a textbook.

The invention is based on the object of creating a book that increases attention while reading, is free-standing and is easy to grip.

To solve this problem, a book with the features of claim 1 is provided. Such a book has a front and a back cover, as well as an upper cut surface, a lower cut surface and a spine, the upper cut surface and the lower cut surface being arranged with their ends facing away from the spine in a

opening corner area of the book are adjacent to each other, so that the spine, the upper cut surface and the lower cut surface form a triangle. Due to this triangular design of the book, when the book is open, a reader looks at two triangular pages, each of which is adjacent to one of its side edges and is held together by a binding.

Printed text runs in lines of text that are conveniently oriented perpendicular or parallel to the binding that runs down the middle of the opened book, with the line length increasing or decreasing from line to line according to the width of the page. This typically results in a triangular block of text. Because of this essentially triangular block of text, the reader's eye does not make constant eye movements while reading, but reacts with increasing or decreasing eye excursions from line to line according to the increasing or decreasing line lengths. The varying eye excursions increase attention when reading.

Advantageous embodiments of the invention are described in the subclaims, the description and the drawings.

Thus, in a first advantageous embodiment, the book can be made thicker at the spine than at the corner area to be opened. In a preferred development of the book, the front and/or back cover has a recessed grip in the area of the spine. In this case, the book can be easily grasped and held with one hand, which is particularly advantageous for reference works, as the reader of the reference work has his other hand free to turn the pages or write.

The present invention is described below purely by way of example using an advantageous embodiment with reference to the accompanying drawings.

Fig. 1 shows a triangular book 10 according to the invention with an upper cutting surface 12, a lower cutting surface 14 and a spine 16, the book standing upright on its lower cutting surface 14. The upper cutting surface 12 and the lower cutting surface 14 adjoin one another with their ends 18, 20 facing away from the spine in an openable corner region 22 of the book 10. The upper cutting surface 12, the lower cutting surface 14 and the spine 16 are each of the same length, so that an equilateral triangular shape of the book 10 results.

The book 10 also has a front cover 24 and a rear cover 26, each of which borders on the spine 16 with one of its sides. In Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 it can be seen that the front cover 24 and the rear cover 26 are thicker in the area of the spine 16 than in the corner area 22 to be opened, so that the book 10 is overall thicker at the spine 16 than at its corner area to be opened. Both the upper cutting surface 12 and the lower cutting surface 14 taper towards the corner area 22 to be opened.

In an alternative embodiment of the book 10, the front cover 24 and the rear cover 26 are thickest in the lower corner region 27, so that not only the lower cutting surface tapers towards the corner region 22 to be opened, but also the spine 16 tapers towards the upper corner region 28.

The front cover 24 and the rear cover 26 are each provided with a grip recess 29, 30 in the area of the spine, which is essentially elongated and runs parallel to the spine. The grip recesses 29, 30 extend over approximately the entire length of the spine, with the width of the grip recesses 29, 30 corresponding to slightly more than a finger's width. Due to these grip recesses 29, 30, the book can be easily grasped and held with one hand.

Fig. 3 shows a view into an opened triangular book 10. A triangular left book page 32 and a triangular right book page 34 adjoin one another with one of their side edges 36, 38, where they are held together by a book binding (not shown). The book pages 32, 34 are printed with text lines 44, whereby the text lines 44 end or begin in the area of the book binding at essentially the same distance from the book binding. In the area of the cut edges 46, 48, a constant distance between the text lines 44 and the cut edge 46, 48 is also maintained. Due to the triangular shape of the book pages 30, 32, the length of the text lines 44 increases in the upper half 50 of the book 10 towards the middle, while in the lower half 52 of the book 10 it decreases again away from the middle.

Fig. 4 shows several books 10 which are put together in such a way that they form a ring-shaped arrangement 54. Each of the books 10 stands upright, with its openable corner region 22 facing the inner ring opening 56. The books 10 are so close to each other

arranged so that adjacent books 10 touch each other in the upper corner region 28, in which the upper cut surface 12 borders the book spine 16. Books whose spine 16 has a constant width over its entire length are spaced apart from each other in such a ring-shaped arrangement 54 in the lower corner region 27, in which the lower cut surface borders the book spine 16. An essentially wedge-shaped gap 58 is formed between adjacent books 10.

By using books 10 of the alternative embodiment, which are thinner in both the openable corner region 22 and the upper corner region 28 than in the lower corner region 27, the gaps 58 between adjacent books 10 in a ring-shaped arrangement 54 of several similar books 10 can be avoided (Fig. 5).

Claims (8)

1. A book with a spine, an upper cut surface and a lower cut surface, as well as a front cover and a back cover, the upper and lower cut surfaces adjoining one another with their ends facing away from the spine in an openable corner region of the book, so that the spine, the upper cut surface and the lower cut surface form a triangular shape. 2. Triangular book according to claim 1, characterized in that the triangle formed by the upper and lower cut surfaces and the spine is isosceles, wherein in particular the cut surfaces form the legs of the triangle. 3. Triangular book according to claim 2, characterized in that the triangle formed by the upper and lower cutting surfaces and the spine is equilateral. 4. Triangular book according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the book is thicker at the spine than at the corner area to be opened. 5. Triangular book according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the front and/or rear cover is thicker in the region of the spine than in the corner region to be opened. 6. Triangular book according to claim 5, characterized in that the front and/or rear cover has a recessed grip in the region of the spine. 7. Triangular book according to claim 6, characterized in that the grip recess is elongated and runs parallel to the spine. 8. Triangular book according to claim 7, characterized in that the recessed grip extends over approximately the entire length of the spine.
