Zielfernrohre üblicher Bauart weisen in der Regel ein rein optisches Linsensystem auf. Die Zieleinrichtungen, Kimme und Korn, werden zu einer Einheit, dem Absehen, zusammengefasst. Das Absehen ist in der Regel als Zielstachel oder als Fadenkreuz, in unterschiedlichen Ausprägungen, aufgebaut. Eine Beleuchtung des Absehens ist generell möglich. Durch die optischen Einrichtungen werden Ziel und Absehen scheinbar auf eine Bildebene gebracht. Durch diesen Aufbau wird dem Schützen der Zielvorgang dahingehend erleichtert, dass sich das menschliche Auge auf nur eine Entfernung einstellen muss. Das Auslösen der Kamera im Moment der Schussabgabe kann entweder manuell, durch eine Verbindung mit dem Abzug der Schusswaffe, oder über elektronische Sensoren (Beschleunigung, Geräusch) erfolgen. Somit ist gewährleistet, dass genau im Moment des Schusses ein Bildaufnahme erfolgt.
