Die Finger werden von Distanzsensoren (3) beobachtet. Die Erkennung eines virtuellen Tastendrucks erfolgt durch Abstandsmessungen. Kommt ein Finger der Unterlage näher als ein vorgegebener Wert, z. B. 3 mm, wird dies als Tastendruck interpretiert. Eine besondere Ausführung dieses Systems benutzt eine weiche, kissenartige Un terlage.
