Description
Process for the briquetting of the oxygen refining steel Accruing dust When steel is exposed to oxygen, considerable amounts of Dust, commonly called LD dust. Because of the high iron oxide content this one Dust, an attempt was made to feed this dust back into the metallurgical process. There were considerable difficulties because of the fineness of the dust caused considerable dust nuisance during the unavoidable reloading and transport and the fine dust for the most part again after its introduction into the converter was carried out. Try briquetting the dust to keep it chunky smelting has only led to success so far if the dust a significant percentage of ferrous burnt limestone, lime, or cement is admixed as a binder. Here, the mixture was still a sodium or Potassium carbonate solution added as a hardening accelerator.
It is also known to add sodium carbonate to iron ores containing chromium. Here, however, the sodium carbonate should serve to convert the chromium contained in the iron ore into sodium chromate, and lime in the form of Ca (OH) should also be added to the iron ore. After thorough mixing and with the addition of water, such a mixture can be pressed as a pasty mass with low pressure in screw extrusion presses to give plastic moldings; however, a subsequent heat treatment in an oxidizing atmosphere with 900 to 1200 ° C temperature is required so that then the moldings in a liquid, for. B. warm water, can be freed from chromium or aluminum by extraction. The firing gives the originally plastic bricks a low strength of a few kilograms / cm2.
In this process, the sodium carbonate is not used to make it briquettable of the briquetting, but should primarily be a chemical one Effect implementation. The compacts are solely by the during the Mineralogical-chemical reactions occurring during heating solidified.
It has now been found that stable briquettes can be produced from low-density dust if the dust is mixed with 3 to 1011 / g sodium carbonate as the sole binder and this mixture is put in briquette presses at a pressure of over 400 kg / cm2, preferably about 2000 kg / cm2, is briquetted. The sodium carbonate is advantageously added to the sludge produced during dedusting before drying. It is also possible to proceed in such a way that the sodium carbonate is fed to the dust as soon as it is precipitated in a wet dedusting unit.
In the method according to the invention, only the sodium carbonate has the effect a considerable improvement in the ability to be briquetted with a corresponding increase the briquette strength. The success of the invention is presumably due to that the sodium carbonate changes the surface of the dust grains, so that through Crystallization creates an effective binder. The procedure is in the the following working examples: Example 1 From the wet dedusting system Accruing LD dust was dried with 5% sodium carbonate with the addition brought to about 8% moisture content by water, mixed well in a mixer and briquetted to stable briquettes at a pressure of 2000 kg / cm2.
Example 2 LD dust arising from the dry dedusting system was made with a weak sodium carbonate solution to a moisture content of about 8% and a soda content of 3% and with a pressure of 2000 kg / cm2 briquetted. Example 3 LD dust occurring in wet dedusting was 7% Sodium carbonate in a mixer well mixed, to a moisture level 8% dried and briquetted to briquettes at a pressure of 2000 kg / cm2.
