Das im Erdgas enthaltene Methan wird mittels Wasser dampf gemäß folgender Gleichung CH4 + H2O → 3H2 + CO2 in Wasserstoff 7 und Kohlenstoff (hier nicht dargestellt) umgesetzt. Der Wasserstoff 7 wird den Brennstoffzellen 3 über die Leitung 8 zugeführt, und dort in elektische Energie umgesetzt. Diese wird dazu verwendet, den für die Spaltung erforderlichen Wasserdampf herzustellen. Der Kohlenstoff wird an Land transportiert und zu Fasern (hier nicht dargestellt) verar beitet.
