Abstract

The present invention relates to a new class of cationic and amphipathic peptides that possess antimicrobial activity. The peptides of the present invention have the amino acid sequence, P3-B AILRKATRRLVKLIV-NH2 (SEQ ID No. 1: P3-B), P3-C AIWRKATRRLVKLIV-NH2 (SEQ ID No. 2: P3-C), either constructed entirely or partially with amino acids in stereochemical configuration D or stereochemical configuration L, or combinations thereof or pharmaceutically acceptable salts of the peptides of this invention. Also within the scope of the present invention are pharmaceutical compositions containing said peptides with the most suitable pharmaceutically acceptable carriers or carriers depending on the dosage form chosen. The invention provides methods for inhibiting the growth of bacteria by direct contact of organisms with the effective inhibitory amount of the peptides.
