Abstract

A patch is presented for use in conjunction with a surface, the patch including a backsheet having an adherent surface, wherein the backsheet is translucent; an outermost surface opposite the adherent surface; an adhesive applied to the adherent surface; a peel layer removably attached to the adhesive; and a malodor-reducing agent. A method for manufacturing a patch is presented, the method including producing a backsheet from a water-dispersible polymer; applying a malodor-reducing agent to the polymer; adding an adhesive to the backsheet; and adhering a peel strip to the adhesive.

Description

Patches to reduce bad odor

This application claims priority to provisional application Serial No. 60/678,450, filed May 6, 2005, with the US Patent and Trademark Office, entitled "Bad Odor Reducing Patches." The entirety of this Provisional Application 60/678,450 is hereby incorporated herein.

Background technique

The present invention relates to apparatus and methods for reducing malodor on or near surfaces.

People try to reduce odor with sprays, powders, roll-ons, and fragrance sticks, but these methods are messy, difficult to control when applied, and wear out quickly within a certain period of time. Other attempts to reduce odor include air freshening products, but such products are usually bulky, heavy decorative devices and/or such products require plugging into an electrical outlet to function.

Contents of the invention

The present invention overcomes the above-mentioned problems of the prior art in that the product of the present invention is easier to place in places where odors may be present, can be more flexible in nature to adapt to different areas/surfaces, and can remain where the user places it location, does not require power, is easier to move, and can be easily replaced with a new scent.

The present invention provides a patch for use in conjunction with a surface, the patch comprising a backsheet having an adhesive surface, wherein the backsheet is translucent; an outermost sheet opposite the adhesive surface layer surface; an adhesive applied to the adhesive layer; a removable release layer bonded to the adhesive; and a deodorant.

The present invention also relates to a patch for bonding to a surface, the patch comprising a backsheet having an adhesive surface, wherein the backsheet is water-dispersible; an outermost surface opposite the adhesive surface; and applied to the adhesive surface. Adhesive on the surface. The patch also includes a removable release layer associated with an adhesive; a graphic printed on one of the outermost layer and the adhesive surface; and a malodor-reducing agent associated with the patch.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT

The term "surface" generally refers to the outermost layer or uppermost boundary of an object.

The term "flushable" as used herein means that objects can pass through toilets and common municipal sewer pipes and sump pumps without incident (eg, clogging).

The term "dispersible" generally means that the fibers in a substance can loosen or dissolve so that the substance breaks down into smaller pieces than they originally were. Loosening usually refers to physical changes such as unraveling or separation. Dissolution is a change of state wherein the substance goes into solution, eg a water soluble polymer dissolves in water.

The term "water-dispersible" generally refers to a fibrous nonwoven composite structure that, when placed in a water-soluble environment, breaks apart or dissolves into smaller pieces over a sufficient period of time. As a result, once dispersed, the structure processes more smoothly in circulatory systems such as sewerage and municipal sewage systems. If desired, the fibrous nonwoven structure can be made more water dispersible or hastened by the use of agitation and/or selection of certain materials as described below. The actual length of time required will depend, at least in part, on specific end-use design criteria.

The term "washable" generally refers to those substances that remain substantially structurally intact through a laundering cycle, including washing and drying, without negatively affecting the laundry, washer or dryer.

The term "translucent" generally refers to allowing light to pass through, which means either transparent (through which an object can be seen clearly) or light that passes through and scatters so that it cannot be seen clearly through it object.

Figure 1 illustrates an example of a patch 10 as an aspect of the present invention. For purposes of illustration, and not limitation of the invention, patch 10 is described as an adhesive. Yet the same patch 10 may be described as another suitable form of patch 10 .

The patch 10 includes a backsheet 15 , an adhesive 20 , a release layer 25 and a deodorant 30 . The patch 10 is suitable for use in conjunction with underwear, garments, absorbent articles, or drawers, pantries or other containers for storing underwear, garments or other absorbent articles. The patch 10 can be used in areas where bad odor reduction is desired. Examples of this include surfaces inside clothing, skin, gym bags, lockers, shoes, trash bags/bins, and the like. The patch 10 may also be used in conjunction with any item or surface where an odor on or near the item or surface may become a body. The patch 10 can be made deformable and flexible so that it can be applied on or near the body.

The patch comprises a backsheet 15 . The backsheet 15 includes an adhesive surface 35 , an outer surface 40 and a backsheet edge 45 . The backsheet 15 is shown as circular, but may be of any suitable shape including geometric shapes, animal shapes, letter shapes, object shapes or any other shape. In other aspects of the invention, the backsheet 15 may be smooth or have different textures to suit the particular application of the patch 10.

In one aspect of the invention, the backsheet 15 is translucent; the translucent backsheet 15 makes it less noticeable when the patch is applied to a surface. As an example of a material having translucent properties, the backsheet 15 may be made of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). For example, the PVA may be Gohsenol NK 05 PVOH (71-75% hydrolyzed, 4.5-5.5 mPa·s viscosity). As another example, PVA can be combined with ethyl vinyl acetate (EVA) as a processing aid (eg, 80% PVOH and 20% EVA). In this aspect, the EVA can be Dupont Bynel 3860 maleic anhydride modified EVA. In another aspect of the invention, the backsheet 15 may be prepared from polymers polymerized with ethylene and acrylic acid, such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene oxide and ethylene coacrylic acid or polycaprolactone.

In another aspect of the invention, the backsheet 15 may comprise flushable or water dispersible materials such as those disclosed in commonly-owned US Patent Nos. 6,384,297 and 6,713,140. As noted above, preparing the backsheet 15 from PVA also results in a water-dispersible backsheet 15 because PVA is hydrophilic and disperses upon contact with water. In another aspect of the invention, a flushable backsheet 15 can be prepared by coextruding or laminating the backsheet 15 with polylactic acid (PLA). For example, PLA is available from NatureWorks, LLC as their PLA6300 and/or PLA6200. As another example, the PLA can be combined with polycaprolactone commercially available as Tone 767 from, for example, Union Carbide. In another aspect of the invention, the flushable backsheet 15 can be processed from materials comprising vinyl alcohol copolymers, polyesters, polyacrylamides, acrylic polymers, vinyl polymers, methacrylic polymers and copolymers, Polylactic acid, polycaprolactone, polyesteramide, polyhydroxybutyrate, polyesteramide, cellulose derived from polymers - hydroxypropylcellulose, hydroxyalkylcellulose, polyalkylene oxide, nylon A backsheet 15 obtained from materials including copolymers, acrylic copolymers and polyethylene glycols was prepared.

In other aspects of the invention, any suitable coform, nonwoven or woven material may be used for the backsheet 15. In one aspect of the invention, the backsheet 15 is an absorbent material. The backsheet 15 may comprise a stretch bonded laminate with pre-stretched elastic filaments and a meltblown material with a layer of woven fabric on each bonding and outer surface 35,40 for the meltblown material. A bonded material and a basis weight of approximately 70 g/m ² (gsm), but any other suitable nonwoven material may be used.

In other aspects of the invention, the material selected for the backsheet 15 may be breathable, or may be made breathable by creating pores in the backsheet 15 so that it is non-occlusive when the patch 10 is in contact with the skin or other surface. of.

In other aspects of the invention, materials for the backsheet 15 may include cotton, rayon, wood pulp, and polymeric substances such as nonwovens, foam, and thermoplastics. The material may form nonwoven fibers made of mutually bonded thermoplastic fibers. The fibers can be formed from a variety of thermoplastic materials, including polyolefins (such as polyethylene or polypropylene), polystyrene, and polyamides (such as nylon). In addition, elastic thermoplastic polymers are also available as fibers (including polyurethanes and block copolymers). Mixtures of any of these materials can be used to form fibers. These fibers may contain additives such as waxes, pigments, stabilizers, and fillers, which are typically added during manufacture to impart one or more desired properties to the fiber.

In one aspect of the invention, the material selected for the backsheet 15 is launderable. The washable backsheet 15 can be prepared from polyethylene film, such as 1 mil polyethylene film, available from Pliant Corporation of Wisconsin, USA. The washable backsheet 15 can also be formed from a breathable multilayer film (poly film), such as a 40 gsm breathable multilayer film, which is commercially available from Swanson Plastics.

As shown in Figures 1 and 2, the patch 10 also includes an adhesive 20 for removably bonding the patch 10 to a surface. Adhesive 20 is applied to adhesive surface 35 of backsheet 15 . Adhesive 20 may be such that its tackiness is minimized, or even lost, once placed in water. In one aspect of the invention for use in conjunction with a garment or container surface, the adhesive 20 is a 34-5602 block copolymer based adhesive, commercially available from National Starch & Chemical Co., Bridgewater, NJ. Other suitable water-soluble adhesives include those described in US Patent Nos. 6,444,761; 4,600,404; 4,522,967 and 3,891,584. Patent publication WO 95/181191 also describes water dispersible adhesive compositions useful in one aspect of the present invention.

In other aspects of the invention, the adhesive 20 can be EVA, polyolefin, starch, styrenic block copolymer (SBC), natural rubber, polybutylene, acrylic, polyurethane, epoxy, polyester , polyamide and silicone. Adhesive 20 may also be a hot melt adhesive including EVA, SBC, or amorphous polyalphaolefin (APAO). Adhesive 20 can also be a synthetic adhesive, such as an emulsion-based formulation (such as polyvinyl acetate (PVAc), EVA, and rubber (including styrene-butadiene rubber and neoprene)) or a solution-based formulation (such as PVA, KYMENE polyamide epichlorohydrin (PAE) resin available from Hercules, and polyethylene oxide). Adhesive 20 may be a water-based adhesive comprising natural and/or synthetic ingredients, including polymers, thickeners, fillers, tackifiers, humectants, and moisturizers. Binder 20 may also be a natural binder, including starches such as corn starch, tapioca starch, and wheat starch, as well as substances such as dextrin and animal glue. The adhesive 20 can also be an adhesive binder including acrylic, ethyleneethyl, acrylate, PVAc, EVA, PVA, cellulose acetate, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester, or polyvinyl chloride (PVC). ). In another aspect of the invention, adhesive 20 may be any other adhesive suitable for removably bonding the patch to a target surface.

In another aspect of the present invention for bonding to a skin surface, the adhesive 20 may be selected as a skin-friendly body adhesive that meets medical standards. In other aspects of the invention, adhesive 20 may be bonded to patch 10 in a pattern for easy separation of the patch. For example, adhesive 20 may be applied in a scalloped pattern, a star pattern, a circle smaller than the size of patch 10, or any other suitable pattern. In another aspect of the invention, the amount of adhesive 20 applied to patch 10 may be graded to provide greater resistance to removal at one or more locations of patch 10 .

Returning now to Figure 1, the patch 10 also includes a release layer 25 removably bonded to the adhesive 20 to prevent the adhesive 20 from sticking to other non-target surfaces. Release layer 25 generally conforms to the shape and size of backsheet 15 or adhesive 20 in shape and size. In another aspect of the invention, the release layer 25 may comprise a label 50 extending radially outwardly beyond the edge 45 of the backsheet 15 so that the release layer 25 may be more easily removed from the backsheet 15 prior to application of the patch. In one aspect of the invention, release layer 25 may be silicone treated paper. For example, Tekkote 24 KSA 24# Peel Release comprising OTIS 6146 paper coated on one side with a silicone release formulation containing a controlled release additive, supplied by Tekkote Corporation, NJ, USA, can be used. In another aspect of the invention, release layer 25 may be a flushable construction comprising a paper based sheet with a water soluble adhesive (PVOH) and a silicone release coating. Materials for this type of release layer 25 are commercially available from Sansei E&M in Japan and International Paper in Wisconsin, USA. Release layer 25 may also be a thin layer of release coating on a water soluble film.

In one aspect of the invention, patch 10 may also include a cover sheet 55 . The protective layer 55 is bonded to the outer surface 40 of the backsheet 15 by a structural adhesive. In this regard, the surface of the protective layer 55 not bonded to the backsheet 15 becomes the outermost surface of the patch 10 . In one aspect of the invention, the protective layer 55 may be made of rayon and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). A specific example of a material used to make the protective layer 55 is 85 gsm hydroentangled spunlace, 70 mm slit width, commercially available from Fujian Nanfang Textile Co., Sandler, Germany. In other aspects of the invention, the protective layer 55 can be made from the same various materials and combinations of materials as described above for making the backsheet 15 . When the protective layer 55 is used to adhere to the backsheet 15, the material of the protective layer 55 can be more breathable than the material of the backsheet 15. The material of protective layer 55 may be left untreated, or the material may be treated to alter its inherent hydrophilic/hydrophobic properties.

In another aspect of the invention, the release layer 25 may include a label 50 bonded to the release layer 25 at a location other than the release layer edge 65 of the release layer 25 . The label 50 may be combined with the release layer 25 in a semicircular extension along the diameter of the release layer 25 . The label 50 can also be combined with any position of the release layer 25 and be bent down to be substantially in a plane with the release layer 25, so that the user can lift the label 50 and then use the label 50 to remove the release layer 25 from the patch 10.

In other aspects of the invention, the protective layer 55 can be bonded to the backsheet 15 through the use of adhesives, pressure, heat, ultrasound, hook materials, or other mechanical or chemical methods. In one aspect of the present invention, the structural adhesive used to bond the cover 55 to the backsheet 15 is Easy Melt #34-5610 structural adhesive, available from National Starch. In other aspects of the invention, the adhesives described above for use as adhesive 20 may also be used to bond protective layer 55 to backsheet 15. Additionally, the structural adhesive used to bond the protective layer 55 may be water soluble or comprise a water soluble adhesive (eg, polymer, adhesive, etc.). Examples of soluble or delayed dispersibility materials include those described in co-applied and commonly owned U.S. Patent Application Serial Nos. 10/427,809 Absorbent Binder Composition And Method Of Making It and 10/42,808 Absorbent Article With Self-Forming Absorbent Binder Layer. Suitable binder compositions include those having crosslinked absorbent polymers and dispersants in amounts added to maintain the structural integrity of the product in use. Such dispersants may be present in an amount such that the product loses its structural integrity at some point either immediately or after soaking in water for a given period of time. Additionally, any suitable adhesive may be used to bond the protective layer 55 to the backsheet 15 .

In one aspect of the invention, the patch 10 may also include a scent pad 60 between the backsheet 15 and the protective layer 55 . The scent pad 60 is simply a carrier sheet added for the deodorant 30 . Scent pad 60 may be a fragrance carrier, odor absorbing material, odor neutralizer, color change indicator, and the like. The scented pad 60 can absorb moisture such as from the skin, perspiration, menstruation, urine, dirt, and the like. In one aspect of the invention, scent pad 60 can be made from rayon and PET or from starch. In other aspects of the present invention, scent pad 60 may be made from any suitable material previously described for making cover 55 or backsheet 15 .

In other aspects of the invention, patch 10 may incorporate the properties, structures, and materials described in co-applied and commonly owned U.S. Patent Application Serial No. 11/069,318 Device for Releasing an Agent to be Detected Through Olfaction, which The present invention is hereby incorporated by reference.

The patch 10 also contains a deodorant 30 . The deodorant 30 can be attached to the patch 10 in any number of locations, by any number of methods, using any number of delivery mechanisms. Means for deodorization include a combination of several elements described below.

The deodorant 30 may be incorporated into the materials used to make the backsheet 15, the protective layer 55, the scent pad 60, the release layer 25 or the adhesive 20 after manufacture. The backsheet 15, scent pad 60 or protective layer 55 may be formed by extruding a polymer to form the material from which they are made from which the structures are then made. In one aspect of the invention, the deodorant 30 is applied or mixed into the polymer prior to extrusion of the polymer. In yet another aspect of the invention, the deodorant 30 is applied to the polymer after extrusion of the polymer. In another aspect of the invention, the deodorant 30 is first encapsulated and then added to the polymer. In another aspect of the invention, deodorant 30 is sprayed onto the polymer. In other aspects of the invention, the deodorant 30 is printed on or similarly applied to the polymer, or applied to the protective layer 55, scented pad 60 or backsheet 15, or applied to the wrapping or wrapping patch 10. In other aspects of the present invention, the deodorant 30 may be applied to one or both of the release layer 25 and the adhesive 20 such that the deodorant 30 is released when the release layer 25 is peeled from the adhesive 20, Alternatively deodorant 30 may be formulated with adhesive 20 and applied to backsheet 15 or release layer 25 . The deodorant 30 may also be present in the adhesive 20 in encapsulated form and activated by contact with the backsheet 15 or the release layer 25 during manufacture.

In other aspects of the invention, the deodorant 30 may be released from the patch 10 in a time-released form. This can be achieved by using microcapsules of the deodorant 30 . This can also be achieved by using heat-triggered, humidity-triggered, sweat-triggered, pressure-triggered or chemically-triggered deodorants 30 .

In one aspect of the invention, the deodorant 30 is a fragrance used to mask unpleasant odors. Examples of aromatic oils include Dandelion Breeze w/Jasmine sold by Givaudan, Totally T with Aloe sold by Givaudan, Smoothing sold by Firmenich, and Chamomile Dreams sold by Symrise.

In yet another aspect of the present invention, the deodorant 30 may be an odor neutralizer or absorbent that assists in eliminating unpleasant odors. Materials that can neutralize or absorb odors include nanoparticles, activated carbon, zinc and aluminum oxides, zeolites, acid-based neutralizers (such as lemon juice), clays, and other chelating agents.

The deodorant 30 may be a biologically active fragrance, such as a bacteria-killing fragrance or a fragrance that both masks and eliminates odors.

In yet another aspect of the present invention, deodorant 30 may be a combination of one or more fragrances, odor neutralizers/absorbents, or other suitable agents.

In one aspect of the invention, the patch 10 may include a pattern printed or disposed thereon. The pattern can be any sketch, photograph, picture, logo or trademark graphic. These patterns can be printed or applied to the protective layer 55 , the scent pad 60 , or the backsheet 15 . In another aspect of the invention, these patterns may be associated with the branding of the product.

In another aspect of the invention, the deodorant 30 may be mixed with ink or other substances used to print or apply the design onto the patch 10 . This aspect can be achieved by using encapsulated fragrance oils that are stable and compatible with the ink chemistry. Also in another aspect of the invention, the ink or other substance used to create the pattern can change color over time or other factors.

In another aspect of the present invention, the patch 10 may contain an odor indicator to indicate to the user of the patch 10 that a new patch 10 needs to be used. In other aspects of the invention, the patch 10 may contain a time, temperature or humidity indicator to indicate to the user of the patch 10 that a new patch 10 needs to be used. As an example of the patch 10 with a temperature indicating agent, the material used to manufacture the patch 10 can be directly added such as heat-sensitive discoloration before extruding polyethylene, polypropylene, PET, polyester, or other thermoplastic films. The patch 10 can be sold to users in a number of ways. In one aspect of the invention, one or more patches 10 may be assembled and placed into a portable dispenser, such as a compact 70 (see Figure 3). In other aspects of the invention, release layer 25 can be made large enough to accommodate a large number of patches 10 in a one-dimensional or two-dimensional arrangement. In another aspect of the invention, the patch 10 may be packaged and distributed with feminine hygiene products, outerwear, underwear, furniture, storage containers, cleaners, air fresheners, or any other suitable product. Such packages may be implemented by manufacturers of feminine hygiene products, by dispensers of such products, or other suitable personnel.

Also in another aspect of the present invention, the patch 10 can be packaged together with one or more patches 10, and the package is placed near women's hygiene products, outerwear, underwear, furniture, storage containers, cleaners, etc. , air fresheners, or any other suitable product.

Example 1

In an embodiment of one aspect of the invention, a plurality of washable patches 10 is prepared. The backsheet 15 is made from a 40 gsm breathable polymeric film, 68 mm wide, available from ZiHua Shanghai, Swanson. The protective layer 55 is made of 85 gsm spunlace fabric with a slit width of 70 mm, which is commercially available from Fujian Nanfang Textile Co., Sandler, Germany. The backsheet 15 is bonded to the protective layer 55 using Easy Melt #34-5610 structural adhesive available from National Starch. The adhesive 20 is in the form of Dispoment #570-5504 sold by National Starch and is applied to the adhesive surface 35 of the backsheet 15. The release layer 25 was made of blue printed base paper sold by Jiangshu Taoshi Paper Company, base weight 45gsm, width 66mm, and bonded to the adhesive 20 on the adhesive surface 35. Each of the fragrances, Dandelion Breeze w/Jasmine available from Givaudan, Totally T available from Givandan, Smoothing available from Firmenich, and Chamomile Dreams available from Symrise, was applied to patch 10. Each full patch 10 is applied to the garment after removing the release tape therefrom.

Example 2

In an embodiment of one aspect of the present invention, a large number of washable patches 10 are produced. The washable backsheet 15 is made of 1 mil polyethylene sheet, 68 mm wide, commercially available from Pliant Corporation, Wisconsin, USA. The protective layer 55 is supported by 0.4 osy spun yarns with a 70 mm seam width, commercially available from Kimberly-Clark Corporation, Wisconsin, USA. The backsheet 15 is bonded to the protective layer 55 using Easy Melt #34-5610 structural adhesive sold by National Starch. The adhesive 20 is in the form of Easy Meltt #34-5602 sold by National Starch and is applied to the adhesive surface 35 of the backsheet 15. The release layer 25 is made from a 66 mm wide coextruded polypropylene release tape sold by Huthamaki and bonded to the adhesive 20 on the adhesive surface 35 . Apply Firmenich FreshLinen fragrance to the patch. Each of the resulting patches 10 was applied to garments after removing the release tape therefrom.

Example 3

In an embodiment of one aspect of the present invention, a large number of washable patches 10 are prepared. The washable backsheet 15 is made of a 40 gsm breathable polymeric sheet sold by Swanson Plastics and has a width of 68 mm. The protective layer 55 is made of printable 0.6 osySMS sold by Kimberly-Clark. The backsheet 15 is bonded to the protective layer 55 by Easy Melt #34-5610 structural adhesive sold by National Starch. The adhesive 20 is in the form of Melt #34-5602 sold by National Starch and is applied to the adhesive surface 35 of the backsheet 15. A release layer 25 made of a base paper of 45 gsm basis weight sold by Tekkote is bonded to the adhesive 20 on the bonding surface 35 . Each fragrance, Dandelion Breeze with Jasmine from Givaudan, Totally T from Givandan, Smoothing from Firmenich, Fresh Linen from Firmenich and Chamomile Dreams from Symrise, was applied to Patch 10 on. Each resulting patch 10 is applied to a garment after removing the release tape therefrom.

Example 4

In an embodiment of one aspect of the invention, a large number of dispensable patches 10 are prepared. The backsheet 15 is made from a mixture of polyethylene oxide and ethylene coacrylic acid in a weight ratio of approximately 80/20, commercially available from Planet Technologies, California, USA. The protective layer 55 is made of PVA sold by Gohsenol and EVA sold by Dupont. The backsheet 15 is bonded to the protective layer 55 by #34-731A water soluble construction adhesive sold by National Starch. The adhesive 20 is in the form of Easy Melt #34-5602 sold by National Starch, which is applied to the adhesive surface 35 of the backsheet 15. The release layer 25 is made from a 66 mm wide coextruded polypropylene release tape sold by Huthamaki and bonded to the adhesive 20 on the adhesive surface 35 . Apply Firmenich Fresh Linen fragrance to the patch. Each full patch 10 is applied to the garment after removing the release tape therefrom.

The patch of claim 1, further comprising a pattern printed on one of the outermost or adhesive surfaces. 11. The patch of claim 1, further comprising a protective layer attached to the backsheet opposite the adhesive surface. 12. The patch of claim 11, further comprising a scented pad between the protective layer and the backsheet. 13. The patch of claim 12, wherein the protective layer and scented pad are translucent. 14. A deodorant patch product comprising: dispensers; and a plurality of patches placed within the dispenser, each patch having a backsheet with an adhesive surface, an adhesive applied to said bonding surface, a release layer removably bonded to the adhesive, and Deodorant incorporated into the patch. 15. The product of claim 14, wherein the dispenser comprises a base and a lid, and wherein the patch is accessible by opening the lid. 16.
