Abstract

Knitted gauze fabric is absorbent and ravel-resistant and comprises courses of irregular stitches, of different shapes and dimensions, of absorbent yarn, with several weft yarns retained in the stitches and able to restrict the extensibility of the fabric coursewise. Pref. each of the weft yarns is retained in different courses of stitches, so as to be disposed obliquely w.r.t. these courses. Each weft yarn may be retained at consecutive points in the consecutive courses of stitches. The fabric is knitted on a circular machine with 2 sets of needles and sinkers; a tricot fabric with irregular stitches is knitted from one yarn, and simultaneously the second set of needles is operated so that the yarns fed to them are not knitted into stitches but retained in the irregular stitches to form the weft yarns. The fabric may be cut walewise, for use as bandages or dressings.
