Description

          we- niger als 50 % Kieselsäure enthält.

  Electric fluorescent tube with alkali metal vapor coating. The main patent describes an electrical fluorescent tube with a filling of alkali metal vapor, for example sodium vapor, which consists of a borosilicate glass which, in addition to boric acid and glass formers, such as alkalis, alkaline earths and -Aluminium oxide,

          Contains less than 50% silica. It was customary to add the aluminum oxide in the form of alumina and the silica in the form of commercial glass sand to the mixture, as in the glass industry.

   Even though such tubular glass is quite sufficient in many cases in terms of resistance to alkali metal vapor and also in terms of heat resistance, unwanted discoloration of the glass often becomes apparent when the tubes are put into operation for a long time, especially when the tube cross-sections are very small . It has been shown that this hitherto not entirely avoidable discoloration of the glass is largely suppressed as soon as silica and alumina are not used in the usual manner in glass technology, i.e. in the form of commercially available glass sand and clay, but as chemically pure substances.

   The reason for this is to be seen in the fact that commercially available glass sand and also clay always contain more or less iron oxide. Accordingly, according to the invention, when producing the tubular glass, care is taken that, for example, all the components of the glass are largely free of iron oxide, so that the iron oxide content of the finished glass does not exceed 0.10;

  Instead of using starting materials that are as low in iron oxide as possible, substances such as sodium chloride can also be added to the melt, which cause the iron oxide to evaporate so that the finished glass does not contain more than 0.1% iron oxide.
