Abstract

An electrically powered vehicle comprising two wheels, one of the wheels being a front wheel and the other one being a rear wheel. A first of the wheels comprises an axle; a hub portion comprising a rotary electric motor, the rotary electric motor comprising a stator having a stator frame fixed to the axle, and a rotor surrounding the stator and separated therefrom by an air gap, the rotor having a rotor frame coupled to the axle via bearings; and a tire mounted to an outer surface of the rotor frame. A second of the wheels has a hub portion. The electrically powered vehicle also comprises a frame structurally connecting the hub portions of the first and second wheels. An inner surface of the stator frame of the first wheel defines a space for housing a first power supply. An additional power supply is mounted in the hub portion of the second wheel. An electrical cable is carried by the frame for coupling the electrical motor with the additional power supply.

Claims (17)

1. An electrically powered vehicle comprising:
two wheels, one of said wheels being a front wheel and the other one being a rear wheel;
a first of said wheels comprising:
an axle, a hub portion comprising a rotary electric motor, said rotary electric motor comprising a stator having a stator frame fixed to the axle, and a rotor surrounding the stator and separated therefrom by an air gap, the rotor having a rotor frame coupled to the axle via bearings, a tire mounted to an outer surface of the rotor frame;
a second of said wheels having a hub portion; and a frame structurally connecting the hub portions of the first and second wheels, wherein an inner surface of the stator frame of the first wheel defines a space for housing a first power supply, wherein an additional power supply is mounted in the hub portion of the second wheel, and wherein an electrical cable is carried by the frame for coupling the electrical motor with the additional power supply.
2. A vehicle as claimed in claim 1, wherein the power supplies comprise a plurality of battery cells.
3. A vehicle as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the stator comprises a plurality of electromagnet core segments.
4. A vehicle as claimed in claim 3, wherein the stator frame is non-magnetic and said electromagnet stator segments are ferromagnetically isolated from each other.
5. A vehicle as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the rotor comprises a plurality of permanent magnets that are spatially separated from each other.
6. A vehicle as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the stator frame space further comprises control elements for driving the electromagnet stator segments.
7. A vehicle as claimed in any one claims 1 to 6, wherein the stator frame space further comprises battery recharging circuitry.
8. A vehicle as claimed in any one claims 1 to 7, wherein the stator frame is cylindrical.
9. A vehicle as claimed in any one claims 1 to 8, wherein the first wheel is a rear wheel.
10. A vehicle as claimed in any one of the claims 1 to 8, wherein the first wheel is a front wheel.
11. A vehicle as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 10, further comprising a switch coupled to the electrical cable for selectively connecting the additional power supply in the second wheel.
12. A vehicle as claimed in claim 12, further comprising an handle bar and wherein the switch comprise a throttle at the handle bar.
13. A vehicle as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 12, wherein the space in the stator frame for housing the first power supply is bounded in the radial direction by the axle and the inner surface of the stator frame and is bounded in the axial direction by partition plates extending between the axle and the stator frame.
14. A vehicle as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 13, wherein the second wheel further comprises:
an axle;
a cylindrical stator frame fixed on the axle, an inner surface of the stator frame defining a space for housing the additional power supply;
a cylindrical rotor frame coupled to the axle, and a tire mounted to an outer surface of the rotor frame.
15. A vehicle as claimed in claim 1, wherein the second wheel further comprise:
a plurality of electromagnet stator segments mounted on and distributed about an outer surface of the stator frame; and a plurality of permanent magnets supported on an inner surface of the rotor frame and distributed to surround the stator segments to form a radial air gap therebetween, in order to provide an all wheel drive propulsion.
16. A vehicle as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 15, wherein the tire of one of said wheels is mounted to the outer surface of the corresponding rotor frame via a bicycle spoke frame.
17. A vehicle as claimed in any one claims 1 to 16, wherein the vehicle is a bicycle.
