Abstract

Une émulsion bitume-eau est traitée avec un mélange contenant du naphta et un hydrocarbure aliphatique léger tel que le butane. Le traitement déstabilise l'émulsion, ce qui permet d'en retirer en grande partie l'eau et la substance minérale. Le traitement entraîne également la précipitation de certains des asphaltènes présents dans le bitume. Le degré de désasphaltage est facilement maîtrisé afin d'obtenie une teneur précise en asphaltènes. Comme, pour les pétroles lourds tels que le bitume de l'Athabasca, les métaux tels que le nickel et le vanadium, sont concentrés dans les fractions dont le point d'ébullition est élevé et sont associés aux asphaltènes, l'élimination des asphaltènes réduit la teneur en métaux du produit. Selon la concentration en métaux et en asphaltènes choisie, le produit traité peut être valorisé davantage grâce à une série de procédés de conversion, notamment dans des unités de cokéfaction et d'hydrocraquage.
