Abstract
A hard hat has a body with a crown portion and a visor portion. The crown portion has an arcuate front and an arcuate back. The arcuate front is transparent. The visor portion extends outwardly from the arcuate front of the crown portion.
The visor portion is transparent. The hard hat increases the upper range of vision of the worker, assists in worker identification on the worksite, and improves worksite communication.

Description
TITLE OF THE INVENTION:
hard hat with transparent visor NAME OF INVENTOR:
Bill J. Ostertag FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a hard hat with a transparent visor R~K~ROUND OF THE INVENTION
Most hard hats have a visor and front forehead section made of solid, coloured, plastic material. Since the user is unable to see through this solid plastic material, a significant vision loss is experienced in the upper field of view. As a result of this vision loss, the user is unable to take measures for his own protection. A worker can easily strike his head by running into unobserved low hanging overhead objects in the workplace. When an unexpected force impacts upon the hard hat, it can result in whiplash type injuries to the neck. Since the neck is usually in a relaxed position at the time of impact, the injury can potentially be quite severe.
Another problem in the workplace is that individual workers all look the same, once they put on their hard hats and work clothes. This adversely effects personal interaction and communication which can be important in the workplace.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
What is required is a hard hat that will address these problems.
According to the present invention there is provided a hard hat which includes a body having a crown portion and a visor portion. The crown portion has an arcuate front and an arcuate back. The arcuate front is transparent. The visor portion extends outwardly from the arcuate front of the crown portion. The visor portion is transparent.
The hard hat, as described above, provides a complete upper range of vision to the user. The user can see objects through the visor. In addition, the user can look through crown of the hard hat where the arcuate front of the crown meets the visor. That portion of the transparent arcuate front of the crown that is above the wearers line of sight, plays a valuable secondary role by making the wearer readily identifiable. This improves communication on the worksite and, in appropriate circumstances, may play a role in worker safety.
Although beneficial results may be obtained through the use of the hard hat, as described above, sunlight can temporarily blind a user. Even more beneficial results may, therefore, be obtained when the transparent arcuate front of the crown portion and the transparent visor portion are made from a photosensitive material that darkens incrementally in response to the intensity of light to which it is exposed.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
These and other features of the invention will become more apparent from the following description in which reference is made to the appended drawings, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a top plan view of a hard hat constructed in accordance with the teachings of the present invention.
DE~TT.~n DESCRIPTION OF THE rn~r-r;KK~ EMBODIMENT
The preferred embodiment, a hard hat generally identified by reference numeral 10, will now be described with reference to FIGURE 1.
Hard hat 10 includes a body 12 having a crown portion 14 and a visor portion 16. Crown portion 14 has an arcuate front 18 and an arcuate back 20. Arcuate front 18 is transparent.
Visor portion 16 extends outwardly from arcuate front 18 of crown portion 14. Visor portion 16 is also transparent.
Transparent arcuate front 18 of crown portion 14 and transparent visor portion 16 are both made from a photosensitive material that darkens incrementally in response to the intensity of light to which it is exposed.
The use and advantages of hard hat 10 will now be described with reference to FIGURE 1. With hard hat 10, a user is able to look through visor portion 16 and arcuate front 18 of crown portion 14 where visor portion 16 is attached to crown portion 14. Since the user is able to see properly in his upper range of vision, he is able to take immediate action to protect himself from over head hanging safety hazards. The photosensitive material out of which arcuate front 18 of crown portion 14 and visor portion 16 are made, will darken in response to the intensity of the light. This ensures the user will not find himself temporarily blinded. Transparent arcuate front 18 of crown portion 14 in combination with transparent visor portion 16, provide a full unrestricted facial view. The most distinguishable upper facial features and characteristics, including forehead, hair line, hair colour, etc, will easily be recognized and identified on the job. This will enhance interaction between workers and their supervisors. For example, when a supervisor issues an instruction he can ensure 211438g that he is addressing the individual worker intended and see the workers facial features to ensure that the instruction was heard and understood.
It will be apparent to one skilled in the art that modifications may be made to the illustrated embodiment without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter defined in the Claims.
