Abstract

Disclosed is a unique booklet containing a plurality of individual sports cards. In a second embodiment of the invention, there is disclosed a booklet containing one card. Both booklets are connected together by the front and back cover margins until opened by the consumer. The booklets are made in a high speed operation and the resultant cards are precisely of regulation standard size and completely detached from the booklet.

Description

_ 74754-1 DISCLOSURE
This invention relates to trading cards and more particularly to a booklet enclosing one or more free standing cards, and a method of making the same.

Backqround Baseball and other sport trading cards have become more popular in recent years. Trading cards must be of regulation size, 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" and made of a fairly heavy paper stock such as box board. Trading cards have been distributed with such things as chewing gum in shrink wrap, or in other types of packaging.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a booklet enclosing a number of loose trading cards, the trading cards being kept intact within the booklet until the booklet is opened by the consumer. Booklets may consist of a simple mailout containing one trading card or as an enclosure, in such products as breakfast cereals, which contain two or more cards.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a box board blank which can be made into a booklet, in a fast and economical manner, with little manual handling.
Therefore the present invention seeks to provide a booklet containing one or more sports cards comprising: a front cover panel and a rear cover panel, foldably joined to one another; at least one of said front or rear cover panels including an inwardly folded margin strip; said margin strip being permanently attached to said front or rear cover by means of - 206~79174754-1 a suitable adhesive; at least one detached sports card of standard dimensions located between said front and rear cover panels; said front cover panel including a cut-away portion adapted to be manipulated by a consumer; said front and rear cover panels being detachably connected to one another at a location on said margin strip by a suitable adhesive; whereby, in operation, when said cut-away portion is manipulated, said front and rear cover panels are separated at said margin strip, thereby presenting one or more detached sports cards to a consumer.
The present invention further seeks to provide a method of making a booklet containing one or more sports cards comprising the steps of:
1) passing a box board blank of standard dimensions through an offset lithographic press and applying printed matter to each side thereof;
2) passing said blank with printed matter thereon through a die cutting press, and applying creases, perforations, scores and cutouts at predetermined positions;
3) stripping said die cut blank with an air gun to create a plurality of flattened smaller identically printed portions of said blank;
4) passing said smaller identically printed portions through a folder-gluer machine, and applying glue at predetermined locations and folding said printed portions along predetermined crease lines, thereby producing a detachably closed booklet, having a front and a rear cover;
5) passing said booklet through a slitter machine and making a plurality of cuts perpendicular to a fold line joining said front and rear covers; thereby producing two or more individual booklets containing one or more sports cards.
The present invention further seeks to provide a method of making a booklet containing a plurality of sports cards comprising the steps of:
1) applying printed matter to a box board blank on both sides thereof;
2) passing said printed blank in a flattened condition through a die cut machine and creating creases, cuts, scores and cutouts at predetermined locations;
3) passing said die cut printed blank through a folder-gluer and applying glue on at least two locations on one side of a first margin strip;
4) folding said first margin strip with a third panel detachably connected thereto inwardly along a fold line and securing the same on a front cover panel;
5) folding a fifth panel member about a score line onto a fourth panel member;
6) applying glue on at least two locations on a second margin strip;
7) folding said fourth and fifth panel members along with said second margin strip about a fold line onto a rear cover panel;
8) applying glue on at least two locations on the opposite side of said second or said first margin strip;
9) folding said front cover panel onto said rear cover 2~68791 _ 74754-1 panel about a central fold line and detachably securing one to the other, at said glue locations on the opposite sides of said margin strips;
10) cutting said booklet with a plurality of cuts perpendicular to said central fold line to produce at least two booklets containing a plurality of detached sports cards.
The present invention further seeks to provide a method of making a booklet containing at least one sports card comprising the steps of:
1) applying printed matter to a box board blank on both sides thereof;
2) passing said printed blank in a flattened condition through a die cut machine and creating creases, cuts, scores and cutouts at predetermined locations;
3) passing said die cut printed blank through a folder-gluer, and applying glue on at least two locations on one side of a first margin strip;
4) folding said first margin strip with a third panel detachably connected thereto inwardly along a fold line and securing the same on a front cover panel;
5) applying glue on at least two locations on said opposite side of said margin strip;
6) folding said front cover panel onto said rear cover panel about a central fold line and detachably securing one to another at said glue locations on the opposite side of said margin strip;
7) cutting said booklet with a plurality of cuts perpendicular to said central fold line to produce at least two booklets containing detached sports cards.
The present invention further seeks to provide a box board blank for use in making a booklet containing a plurality of sports cards comprising: a first elongate rectangular front cover panel foldably connected to a second elongate rectangular rear cover panel; a first margin strip foldably connected to said front cover panel; a second margin strip foldably connected to said rear cover panel; a first rectangular elongate card member panel detachably connected to said first margin strip; a second rectangular elongate card member panel detachably connected to said second margin strip; and a third rectangular elongate card member panel detachably connected to said second rectangular elongate card member panel.
The present invention further seeks to provide a box board blank for use in making a booklet containing at least one sports card comprising: a first elongate rectangular front cover panel foldably connected to a second elongate rectangular rear cover panel; a first margin strip foldably connected to said front cover panel; and a first rectangular elongate card member panel detachably connected to said first margin strip.
The invention is described in detail in the following drawings wherein:

box board;
Figure 2 is a top view of a box board blank shown generally as B in Figure l;

-Figure 3 is a perspective view of Figure 2 illustrating the first fold by a folder-gluer machine;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of Figure 2 illustrating the second fold operation by a folder-gluer;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of Figure 2 illustrating a third fold operation by a folder-gluer;
Figure 6 is a top view of the present invention shown in Figure 2 after it has gone through a final fold in a folder-gluer;
Figure 7 is a top view of a finished booklet after the slitting operation;
Figure 8 is a top view of an alternative embodiment box board blank.
Figure 1 is a standard box board blank which is purchased in sheets 28" X 40" from a paper box board manufacturer.
The box board pieces are passed through a standard offset lithographic press and contain printing on both sides thereof.
The box board is divided into ten portions which have identical printing information on each.
After the box board blank shown in Figure 1 is printed on both sides thereof, it is passed through a die cut machine. A
common type of machine is manufactured by Bobst*. The die cut machine is set up to make ten identical pieces of flat box board blanks of finished size 7 7/8" X 13 11/16". Any size can be used depending on the desired number of cards and booklets, but for the purposes of describing the present invention the aforementioned dimensions are used. Each of the ten identical pieces form two booklets having three loose baseball cards in each. The die cut * Trade-mark 6 machine is set up to make cuts, scores, deep creases and cutouts.
Figure 2 shows a blank labelled B with the necessary score lines and folds which are made during the die cutting operation. A box board blank is divided into a first panel 1 which forms back covers of the booklets, and a second elongate rectangular panel 2 which forms the front covers of the booklets.
Panel 2 is foldably joined along fold line 6 to margin strip 8. A
rectangular elongate card member panel 3 is adapted to form two sports cards I, II of standard 2 1/2" X 3 1/2" dimensions. As well, there are rectangular elongate card member panels 4 and 5 having similar makeup to card member panel 3.
Along margin strip 8 are two rectangular gluing areas adapted to hold an adhesive. These are marked 7A and 7B. Cuts which are perpendicular to the fold line 6 are made by the die cutting machine and marked as 8A, 8B, 8C and 8D. These form the upper and lower limits of the gluing areas 7A and 7B, respectively.
Front cover panel 2 and margin strip 8 are separated from card member panel 3 by means of cuts and crease lines.
Beginning at the top of the box board blank B a crease line descends to the point lOA, thereafter a cut line 9A continues downwardly to lOB, and thereafter it continues as a crease until the point marked lOC, and thereafter a cut 9B extends downwardly until point lOD, and thereafter a crease continues downwardly to the bottom of box board blank B.
Thus, rectangular glue area 7A is bounded by cut line 9A, score lines 8A and 8B and fold line 6. Similarly, glue area 21~68791 ` 74754-1 7BiS bounded by cut line 9B, score lines 8C and 8D, and fold line 6.
The positioning of the cut lines 9A and 9B are important to ensure that the finished product, mainly sports cards of the standard 2 1/2"X3 1/2",will be completely separated from the booklet after production. The resultant free standing sports cards will be of the dimensions shown as I and II.
Card bearing panels 4 and 5 are separated from one another by cut lines llA and llB, a crease line between 12B and 12C, a crease line from 12A to the upper limit of box board blank B, and a crease line from 12D to the lower limit of the box board blank B.
Rear cover panel 1, like front cover panel 2, also has a margin strip 16 which is foldably attached to rear cover panel 1 at fold line 15. Glue areas 17A and 17B are rectangular areas located along margin strip 16. Glue area 17Ais bounded at its upper and lower limits with score lines 18A, 18B which are perpendicular to fold line 15. Similarly, glue area 17Bis bounded on the top and bottom by score lines 18C and 18D.
Margin strip 16is separated from card member panel 4 by means of creases and cuts. A crease commences at the top of box board blank B and terminates at 14A, whereupon a cut 13A extends downwardly to a point shown generally as 14B, thereafter a crease line extends to the point marked 14C, and thereafter a cut 13B
extends downwardly to a point 14D, and thereafter it continues as a crease line to the bottom of box board blank B.
Rear panel cover 1 is joined to front cover panel 2 by means of a deep central crease line 19. In addition, the box board blank has two cutouts shown generally as 20A and 20B. These are centered over the fold line 6. There is one cutout in the upper portion of the box board blank B which forms a rounded corner on the booklet containing card number I. A second cutout is located in the mid portion of box board blank B to form a rounded corner on a booklet which contains card II.
The cutouts 20 and 20B, once folded upon themselves, form a type of rounded corner on the outer right hand corner of the front cover of the booklets. These help the consumer to separate the front covers from the rear covers in order to view the cards inside.
Box board blank B is separated from the remainder of the other identical nine pieces of box board shown in Figure 1, by peripheral cut lines shown as 21, 22, 23 and 24.
Eventually, after folding and gluing, the box board blank will be cut by means of a slitter along lines 25, 26, 27 and 28. This operation will be more fully described later on in the description.
After the box board blank passes through the die cut press, the large 28" X 40" box board blanks are stacked on pallets and then the individual portions B are stripped out by means of an air gun. This task, of course, can be accomplished by other means, but an air gun is generally the most efficient.
After stripping, the box board blanks are placed on the loading area of a folder-gluer, which is a standard type of box-making machine made by Bobst*. A box board blank B is moved *Trade-mark 9 through the folder-gluer in a direction shown generally as A.
During the first operation, glue is applied to the portions marked as 7A and 7B. Thereafter, panel 3 and margin strip 8 are folded inwardly along fold line 6, and the margin strip 8 is affixed, by glue on areas 7A and 7B, to the periphery of the inside of front cover panel 2. The box board blank B, after this fold, is shown generally as Figure 3 of the drawings. As the box board blank advances, the next operation is the folding of panel 5 inwardly and over panel 4 along lines shown generally as llA, llB. After 10 this operation is completed the box board blank appears as shown in Figure 4.
As the box board blank B advances in the direction A, the next step is the application of glue or adhesive on the portions shown as 17A and 17B. Thereafter, panels 4 and 5 which are partially connected to margin strip 16, are folded inwardly along fold line 15, and adhesive on portions 17A and 17B of margin strip 16 effectively fixedly connect the margin strip 16 to the periphery of the edge of rear cover panel 1.
In the next operation the opposite sides of margin strip 20 16 are coated with adhesive in the same position as that shown generally as 17A and 17B. In Figure 5 one views the box board blank B as the third fold is being completed and the glue applied to the now opposite sides of margin strips 16 in the area shown as 17A and 17B.
The final operation on the folder-gluer is the folding of the two halves of the box board blank together to form a booklet as shown in Figure 6. In this condition, the front and 2068~91 rear covers of the booklet are glued together at portions 7A, 7B, 17A, and 17B of margin strips 8 and 16, respectively.
At this time in the production, the sports cards are still not free inside the booklet as they continue to be attached to the front and rear cover members 2 and 1 by means of those portions, along lines llA, llB; 13A, 13B; and 9A, 9B, which have creases rather than cuts.
The folded booklets, which comprise two booklets as shown in Figure 6, are then taken to a slitter machine and cuts perpendicular to central fold line 19, are made along dotted lines 25, 26, 27 and 28. This operation not only creates the finished product of two booklets from each box board blank B but separates the individual cards inside from the margin strips and the front and rear covers.
In Figure 7, the final product is shown. In operation, the consumer grasps the front cover 2 of the booklet at point 29 and pulls it open thereby releasing the glued area between 17B and 7B, thus disclosing a plurality of free standing cards I.
Figure 8 shows a box board blank of an alternative embodiment of the invention which has only 3 panels. There is a rear cover panel 1, a front cover panel 2, and a card bearing member panel 3. There is only one margin strip shown generally as 8 having glue portions 7A and 7B. Again there are cutout portions 20A and 20B.
The box board blank shown in Figure 8 is used to provide a mailout type of product wherein only one card is enclosed.
Again the box board blank shown in Figure 8 is used to make two -booklets. The same operations are used to produce this one card booklet except that the number of operations in the folder-gluer are fewer.
In operation the blank proceeds through the folder-gluer, in a direction shown generally as A. The first operation is to apply adhesive to points shown as 7A and 7B. Thereafter panel 3, along with margin strip 8 is folded inwardly upon front cover panel 2, along the fold line 6. Thereafter the opposite sides of portions 7A and 7B of margin strip 8, are covered with adhesive and finally, rear cover panel 1 is folded upon panels 3, 2 along the fold line 19, and secured at points 7A and 7B.
Thereafter the same cuts are made perpendicular to the fold line 19, namely cuts 25, 26, 27 and 28, leaving a finished product of two booklets having one loose card each.
It is to be understood that the invention is not restricted to the particular embodiments described herein but comprises any number of cards and booklets made in a similar manner on a folder-gluer machine.
