Abstract

New synthases and the corresponding nucleic acids encoding such synthases are disclosed here. Such synthases have an active site pocket that includes fundamental amino acid residues that are modified to generate desired intermediates and terpenoid reaction products. The synthase modifications are designed based, for example, on the three-dimensional coordinates of tobacco 5-epi-aristolochene synthase, with or without a substrate attached to the active site.
