Um aparelho (110, 150) de acesso de vídeo proporciona teleconferência de áudio e vídeo e telefonia através de um primeiro canal (103) de comunicação tendo comunicação com uma rede (140), tal como a rede telefónica pública comutada ou uma rede ISDN. O aparelho (110) de acesso de vídeo inclui uma interface (210) de rede de linha de fios; um modulador/desmodulador (205) de freq³ência de rádio; uma interface de usuário (215); e um arranjo de processador (190). Um aparelho de videofone (700, 800) é acoplável a um aparelho de acesso de vídeo através de um segundo canal de comunicação para recepção e transmissão de vídeo, e através de um terceiro canal de comunicação para recepção e transmissão de áudio.
