Abstract

A process for washing fabrics includes the steps of contacting the fabrics with a liquor containing a detergent active compound and an orthophosphate and subsequently contacting the fabrics with a liquor containing a tripolyphosphate. The tripolyphosphate may be added to the orthophosphate-containing liquor or may be present in a separate liquor. In the former case the tripolyphosphate may be present from the start of the wash but in a form to delay its dissolution in the liquor, such as by being encapsulated, cogranulated or contained in a sachet. Delay times of about 5 minutes are disclosed. The method leads to reduced incrustation on fabrics.
