Abstract

The invention relates to a method for more efficient and econimical, relating to capital and operational costs, scrubbing of exhaust gases after combustion of sulphur oxides (SOx) with aqueous lime suspensions. In the single-passage counterflow lime wet gas scrubbing towers the velocities of the fumes flow are considerably increased whilst the values of the ratio liquid/gas and the retension times in the reactor tank are reduced as a result of a drip arrestor separator of improved design, the new positioning of the pitch between the nozzles and the use of a hydrocyclone which separates and recirculates the minor lime particles from the gypsum produced as a by-product. The lime in the form of very fine particles, e.g. less than 8, and for more than 99% of the total weight the particles are smaller than 44, is used as scrubber suspension getting into contact with the SOx-containing exhaust gas. The reactance of the scrubber suspension even in lower pH is maintained by continuously operationg hydrocyclone for securing mole ratio between the calcium-containing and sulphur-containing ingredients larger than from 1.3 to 1, simultaneously preserving a lower content both of chlorides and of inert solids. The hydrocyclone removes the larger particles of calcium sulphate and ensures a recirculation flow of fine calcium carbonate and inert solids which can be drained off, if necessary, in order to maintain the lower desired content both of chlorides and inert solids.
