Solvent as an open time/wet edge time extenders and anti-skinning/freeze thaw stability
Field of the Invention
Chemistry relates to the solvent as an open time/wet edge time extenders and antiskinning/freeze thaw stability and the use of said solvent.
Background of the Invention
Paints are used as surface coating on many materials such as wood, mortar, cement, and other materials in order to enhance the appearance and maintain the surface from several conditions such as humidity, sunlight, corrosive, etc. Typically, paint contains mixture of pigments that provide colour to cover the original colour, binder that binds the pigments to the surface and coats .0 the surface like thin film, solvent that uses as solute and dilutes the pigments and the binder to have an appropriate viscosity for working, and additive that is usually added in small amount for enhancing colour properties such as colour distribution, smoothness, gloss, binding stability, sun protection, preventing humidity, etc. Accordingly, due to the environmental problems and limitation in minimizing the amount of a volatile organic compounds in colour, there have been .5 attempts to adjust the paint formulation having the lowest amount of the volatile organic compounds. One challenge to invent the solvent comprising low volatile organic compounds is the ability to maintain paint properties as same as the common solvent that usually contains high volatile organic compounds such as propylene glycol because normally the solvent containing low volatile organic compounds always dry easily and having poor storage stability under high or low 20 temperature.
US20170158885A1 disclosed the use of solvent in water borne paints comprising cosolvent of water and short chain water soluble alcohol and/or glycols selected from ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, propylene glycol, and glycerine at 1 - 30 % by volume of total solvent.
Adeyi et al. (Journal of Health & Pollution Vol. 8, No. 18 - June 2018) disclosed the study of the oxygenated volatile organic compounds as anti-freezing agents in decorative water-based paints. They found that anti-freezing agents could be selected from ethylene glycol, diethylene
2019100711 28 Jun 2019 glycol, triethylene glycol, and propylene glycol whereas the averages of said compounds were
1,350 - 2,710 ppm, 1,000 - 1,980 ppm, 1,000 - 3,900 ppm, and 1,090 - 2,510 ppm, respectively.
US20150073080A1 disclosed the aqueous coating composition containing anti-freezing agents in the amount of less than 2 % by weight. Said compounds could be selected from ethylene 5 glycol, diethylene glycol, propylene glycol, glycerol, 1,2,3-trihydroxypropane, ethanol, methanol, l-methoxy-2-propanol, 2-amino-2-methyl-l-propanol, and FTS-365. The obtained aqueous coating composition contained the volatile organic compounds of less than or equal to 50 g/L.
From the reasons mentioned above, this invention aims to develop the solvent as an open time/wet edge time extenders and anti-skinning/freeze thaw stability, which contains low volatile .0 organic compounds and is a non-toxic environment. Moreover, it does not affect other properties of the paint.
Summary of Invention

In one aspect, the solvent as an open time/wet edge time extenders and anti-skinning/freeze thaw stability comprising:
a) organic compound selected from at least one glycerol or glycerol derivatives in the amount of 10 - 90 % by volume of said solvent; and
