Description

A LOAD CARRYING VEHICLE
FIELD
The invention relates to vehicles including load carrying portions mounted to tilt.
BACKGROUND
Various vehicles such as dump trucks for carrying bulk material and flatbed trucks for carrying cars have load carrying portions mounted to tilt for loading and/or unloading. Typically such vehicles are equipped with dedicated hydraulics to tip the bin or tray. Such hydraulics can be costly to purchase and maintain, and heavy. Heft can be a particular problem in the context of vehicles intended to traverse rough terrain.
Some vehicles incorporate their own crane or similar lifting arrangement for loading cargo onto their relevant load carrying portions.
With the foregoing in mind, the present invention aims to provide improvements in and for load carrying vehicles or at least to provide an alternative for those concerned with such vehicles.
It is not admitted that any of the information in this patent specification is common general knowledge, or that the person skilled in the art could be reasonably expected to ascertain or understand it, regard it as relevant or combine it in any way before the priority date.
SUMMARY
One aspect of the invention provides a vehicle including a load carrying portion mounted to tilt for at least one of loading and unloading; and a crane including a flexible pulling element; and
P1557AUI1

The vehicle may be a trailer.
Another aspect of the invention provides a method of tilting, a load carrying portion of a vehicle, for at least one of loading and unloading;
the vehicle including a crane;
the crane including a flexible pulling element; and a motor for withdrawing the flexible pulling element to lift items;
the method including attaching the flexible pulling element to the load carrying portion; and operating the motor to withdraw the flexible pulling element.

DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS
The vehicle 1 takes the form of a trailer intended to be pulled by a self-propelling tow 5 vehicle. Other variants of the technology disclosed herein may take the form of a selfpropelled vehicle. Yet other variants may be manually propelled.
The trailer 1 incorporates a ladder frame chassis 3 and a draw bar 7 forwardly extending from the chassis. A flat load carrying tray 9 is pivotally mounted to the chassis 3 to pivot about a horizontal axis at the rear of the trailer to tip load to the rear 10 of the trailer.
A crane 11 sits atop draw bar 7 and incorporates a mast 11a and a horizontal boom 11b at the top of a mast 11a. The boom 11b forms part of a top assembly 11c pivotally mounted via pivotal connection 11d to the mast 11a to pivot about a vertical pivot axis.
An electric winch 13 incorporating an electric motor 13a sits atop the boom 11b adjacent the pivot axis. A flexible pulling element in the form of steel cable 15 extends from the winch 13 and about a pulley 17 at the free end of the boom 11b whereby the cable 15 is suspended from the end of the boom.
Other variants of the vehicle 1 might incorporate flexible pulling elements in the form 20 of chain and/or rope, etc.
A free end of the cable 15 carries a snap hook 19. The tray 9 incorporates an eyelet co-operable with the snap hook 19 and remote from its rearward pivot axis. Other forms of co-operable engagement features are possible.
The crane 11 and its electric winch 13 provide a convenient means for safely lifting 25 cargo items such as the cargo items Cl in Figure 1 onto the vehicle 1, e.g. onto the tray 9. By connecting the hook 19 onto the eyelet 9a, the winch 13 (or more
P1557AUI1
2019100531 17 May 2019 specifically its electric motor 13a) is actuable to tilt the tray 9. The cost and weight of actuators dedicated to tilting the tray are thereby avoided. The trailer 1 is a compact, lightweight yet rugged construction well adapted to use with an all-terrain vehicle such as a quad bike for general farm duties but is also well adapted to work with other vehicles.
Preferably the trailer 1 incorporates a mechanism to co-operate with hitches of differing height. In this variant of the trailer 1, the draw bar 7 terminates in a straight run of square hollow sections 7a bisected by transverse holes with which differing hitch mounting features are engageable. Figure 2 shows a hitch mounting feature 21 10 by which the trailer 1 is hitchable to a car. Figure 3 shows an offset adapter 23 between the SHS 7a and the portion 21 whereby the trailer 1 is configured to cooperate with a quad bike QB.
Preferably the motor 13a is equipped with one or more lines 13b by which the motor 13a is connectable to, to draw power from, the tow vehicle, although other variants of 15 the vehicle 1 may have their own onboard power supplies, e.g. battery packs or combustion-powered generators.
The vehicle 1 incorporates an electric motor 13a. Other variants of the vehicle may incorporate other types of motors, e.g. to suit heavy duty applications a winch having a dedicated combustion engine may be desirable. A hydraulic motor, e.g. a hydraulic 20 motor powered via a hydraulic pump connected to the power takeoff of the tow vehicle, would be another convenient option for various applications of the technology.
This particular example of the crane 11 incorporates a long handle 11e pivotally connected to the rotatable assembly 11c to pivot about a horizontal axis relative 25 thereto. The handle 11e hangs under its own weight to the illustrated compact position and then can be lifted horizontally to provide leverage to swivel the pivoting assembly 11c (and in turn the boom 11b) to any desired angular orientation.
A control unit 13c is mounted along the lines 13b to enable a user to actuate the winch 13.

The trailer 1 may incorporate any convenient arrangement of wheels. In this example, it has a forward pair 25a and rear pair 25b of wheels. Each pair of wheels is carried by a respective axle. Each end of each axle is suspended from the chassis 3 via a respective set of leaf springs. Other suspension arrangements are possible. Figure 2 shows a removable jockey wheel 27 mounted to the draw bar 7.
Figure 1 shows droppable and removable walls 9a fitted to the front and sides of the tray 9. Alternatively the front wall 9a may be fixed. The chassis 3 and drawbar 7 are predominantly formed of square hollow section tube steel with a suitable anticorrosion surface treatment. The tray 9 is likewise predominantly formed of steel with 10 a suitable surface treatment. The surface treatment may be zinc based, e.g.
galvanisation. Other materials such as aluminium are possible.
Preferably the load carrying portion 9 is releasably connected to the chassis 3. Underlying support structures other than the chassis 3 are also possible.
A releasable connection between the tray and the underlying support structure provide for convenient removal and replacement of the tray. For example, the flat tray 9 might be replaced by a bin for carrying soil that is tiltable to dump the soil.
Alternatively non-tiltable load holding arrangements might be connected directly to the chassis 3.
Figure 4 illustrates a preferred form of releasable connection 25 by which the tray 9 is 20 mounted to tilt relative to the chassis 3.
The chassis 3 includes a pair of chassis rails 3a. A respective hinge knuckle 25a is welded to the rear of each of the rails 3a. The connection 25 includes a pair of yokes 25b fastened to the tray 9. In this case they are fastened to an underside of the tray 9. The yokes 25b have a mutual spacing complementary to a mutual spacing of the 25 knuckles 25a. Each of the yokes 25b is arranged to bracket a respective one of the knuckles 25a. Each arrangement 25a, 25b is skewered by a respective bolt 25c retained by a respective nut 25d. As such, on each side of the trailer the bolt 25c forms a hinge pin and is secured by the nut 25d, and the nut 25d is removable to enable removal of the hinge pin. Other variants of the concept are possible, e.g. each
P1557AUI1
2019100531 17 May 2019 nut and bolt 25c, 25d might be replaced by a respective clevis pin and cotter pin.
Potentially the yoke 25b and the knuckle 25a may be swapped between the chassis 3 and the tray 9.
The invention is not limited to the described examples. Rather, the invention is defined by the claims.
