Improved Mesh Securing System for a Security Door or Window
Field ofthe Invention [0001] The present invention relates to a security door or window having mesh to allow ventilation and for prevention of intrusion.
Background [0002] Security doors are used in houses, offices and buildings to prevent intruders from entering via breaking through mesh fixed in the frame of the security door. There are several different security doors in existence presently, which utilise different ways in which to secure the mesh and subsequently cover the mesh securing device(s) so as to provide a clean finish to the door.
[0003] A manner of covering an attachment means is shown in Figure 2 of lapsed
Australian patent no. 694515, also known as lapsed Australian application no.
AU1995024001. In this patent a cover is clipped to the upper portion of two clamp portions, but the cover does not assist in the action of clamping the upper portion to the lower portion, so as to clamp the mesh of the security door in between, as shown in the cross-sectional view in Figure 2 of the aforementioned patent. Instead, it simply clips into the upper clamp portion to prevent loss of the attachment means whilst covering the attachment means to provide a clean finish.
[0004] Another manner of covering an attachment means is shown in granted Australian patent application no. AU 2009266412. This patent shows in Figure 2 a clamping member connecting to the main body of the mesh holding system. The main body receives a clipped section of a cover, which also connects to the upper clamping section for clamping the door mesh in place.

Detailed Description of Embodiments of the Invention [0038] Referring to Figure 1, there is illustrated one embodiment of a securing system 10 for securing a mesh 18 in an opening in a security door having a frame formed of frame members 20 and 40. The mesh 18 covers the opening in the door in which the security door is installed. Embodiments of system 10 can also be installed in a window. Typically frame member 20 will form a top edge of the frame, frame member 40 will form a bottom edge of the frame, and members similar to frame member 40 will form side edges of the frame. Frame member 20 has a securing system 21 for securing the mesh 18 in place. Frame member 40 has a securing system 41 for securing the mesh 18 in place.
[0039] Referring to Figure 2, in both securing systems 21,41, there is a clip 12, an adhesive strip 14, and a compressable strip 16. Between the adhesive strip 14 and the compressable strip 16 is the sheet of mesh 18. Preferably the adhesive strip 14 is a double sided adhesive tape, such as 3M™ bonding tape. Preferably the compressible stripl 6 is comprised of a plastics material, such as PVC. In an alternative the compressible stripl 6 is comprised of rubber or similar material.
[0040] Referring to Figure 3, the securing system 21 is shown. The frame member 20 comprises spaced apart projecting members 22, 24, with a channel 26 formed between the projecting members 22, 24. In an embodiment of the invention, the projecting members 22, 24 are inwardly stepped from the sides of the frame section 20. The clip 12 is received in the channel 26. The clip 12 is substantially U shaped in cross-section and has an opening 28 on an inside 29 of the clip 12. Within the clip 12 there is the adhesive strip 14 and the compressable strip 16. The adhesive strip 14 is on one side of the mesh 18 and the compressable strip 16 is on another side of the mesh 18. There is also a retainer 30, (preferably in the form of a fastener, such as a screw), for retaining the clip 12 in the channel 26.
2018211286 02 Aug 2018 [0041] In order to secure the clip 12 to the mesh 18, with the adhesive strip 14 and the compressable strip 16 in place, the clip 12 is compressed, so as to compress the clip 12 so as to bring inside walls of the clip 12 into compressive contact with the adhesive strip
14 and the compressable strip 16, thereby closing the opening 28 into the clip 12 and fastening the mesh 18 to the clip 12. Typically, the compression is compressive deformation so as to deform at least the compressable strip 16. Preferably the compressible deformation is by way of crimping, and more preferably via spot crimping 25 (shown in Figure 2) at places along its length. Other types of compressive deformation may be employed, such as for example pressing, stamping, rolling or pinching.
[0042] Referring again to Figure 3, the clip 12 is inserted into an open face of the channel 26. In this embodiment, the clip 12 comprises at least one angled projecting flange 32 for interacting with the projecting members 22, 24, so as to apply a compressive force to the clip 12 by a wedging action against the projecting members 22, 24 (thereby urging them closer together) when the clip 12 is forced further into the channel 26. The projecting flanges 32, 34, are adjacent the opening 28 of the clip 12.
[0043] In the embodiment shown, a cover 52 is connected to the projecting member 22 by retaining fingers interfering with a retaining channel. Another cover 54 is connected to the projecting member 24 by retaining fingers interfering with a retaining channel. The frame member 20 also comprises a seal 56 between the cover 52 and the mesh 18, and a seal 58 between the cover 54 and the mesh 18.
[0044] Referring to Figure 4, there is the frame member 40 that comprises spaced apart projecting members 42, 44 with a channel 38 between the projecting members 42, 44.
The projecting members 42, 44 are continuous with and substantially in line with the outer wall of the frame member 40. The clip 36 is substantially U shaped in cross-section and has an opening to an inside 46 of the clip 36. Within the clip 36 is an adhesive strip 48 (preferably comprised of double sided adhesive tape), and a compressable strip 50 (preferably comprised of PVC).
[0045] In the present embodiment, the clip 36 is inserted into a side of the channel 38 (rather than through the opening adjacent the opening in the security door). The clip 36 is retained in the channel 38 by outwardly projecting flanges 60, 62, 64, 66 on the clip 36, interacting with inwardly projecting flanges 68, 70, 72, 74 from the members 42, 44.
2018211286 02 Aug 2018 [0046] In an embodiment, the frame member 40 comprises sealing members 78, 80 between the projecting members 42, 44 and the mesh 76.
[0047] In this embodiment, the retainer comprises projecting flanges 60, 62, 64, 66 on the clip 36. Flanges 68, 70, 72, 74 interfere with and thus retain the projecting flanges 60, 62, 64, 66 on the clip 36.
[0048] In one embodiment, the mesh securing system for securing a security door or window to the mesh 76 is implemented by initially inserting the adhesive strip 14, 48 or the compressible strip 16, 50 into the inside of the clip 12, 36 first. It is anticipated that it is preferable to insert the adhesive strip 14, 48 first. Then the mesh 18, 76 is inserted into the inside of the clip 12, 36, and then the other strip 14, 48 or 16, 50 into the inside of the clip 12, 36 on the other side of the mesh 18, 76 to the first inserted strip. The clip 12 or 36, is then compressively deformed, such as by crimped, so as to compress the adhesive strip 14, 48, the mesh 18, 76 and the compressive strip 16, 50 therebetween. The crimped clip is then inserted into the channel 26, 38, so that the retainer 30 or 60, 62, 64, 66 fastens the clip 12, 36 in place within the channel 26, 38.
[0049] In an embodiment, the method further comprises inserting a seal 56, 58 or 78, 80 onto each side of the mesh 18 or 76. In an embodiment, the method further comprises inserting a cover 52 onto the projecting member 22. In an embodiment, the method further comprises inserting a cover 54 onto the projecting member 24.
